A personal worldview refers to the assumptions and concepts we have developed about the world. A person’s worldview provides them with a framework for their thoughts and actions. Worldview provides answers to crucial issues like the significance of life, whether one considers human beings as good or evil or whether one believes in a divine being or higher power (Abi-Hashem, 2017). A person’s worldview is influenced by their culture, religion, and spirituality. Thus, individuals have unique worldviews based on the environment, personal experiences, and personal reflections. In this regard, this paper will describe my worldview and explore a nursing theory that aligns with my philosophy of practice and approach to patient care.

Personal Worldview

My worldview is that every human being should be treated with compassion, respect, and dignity despite their race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. Respect is a vital component not only in healthcare but also in our day-to-day interactions with people. It can be demonstrated by listening to others and putting effort into understanding their concerns (Sims et al., 2020). People should show respect in the professional and social worlds by keeping promises, expressing gratitude, encouraging each other, sharing information, and being empathetic.

My philosophy of nursing practice centers on compassion. I believe that compassion is a virtue and a vital trait that every nurse should possess. Compassion is a feeling that is induced when I witness other peoples’ pain that results in taking interventions to help them and ease their pain. Besides, I view compassion as a human and moral part of nursing practice. Dalvandi et al. (2019) state that compassion is a philosophical basis and central component in the nursing profession. Nurses are expected to demonstrate professional standards in nursing practice by being compassionately responsive to patients’ care needs.

Religious, spiritual, and cultural components influence my nursing practice philosophy and patient care attitude. Christian elements influencing my philosophy of practice and attitude towards patient care include scripture teachings of loving my neighbor as I love myself and not to judge others (Abi-Hashem, 2017). The teachings influence me to treat patients as I wish to be treated if I were in their situation. I strive to make patients more comfortable by easing their distress since I wish that the same is done to me when I am in distress. I have service spirituality, which is built around serving others as a way of spiritual expression. The service spirituality influences my nursing practice as I seek to serve patients in the best manner possible. My culture emphasizes trust, respect, and dignity for all. It influences my interactions with patients since I strive to provide respectful care that promotes patient dignity. Besides, I evaluate nursing interventions to ensure they will maintain a patient’s dignity.

Nursing Theory

Georges’ Emancipatory Theory of Compassion mostly aligns with my nursing practice philosophy and patient care approach. Georges defines compassion as the desire that every person be free from suffering (Constantinides, 2019). The wish is crucial for emancipatory nursing practice and praxis. Emancipatory defines the control that power relations have on suffering and the capacity to make compassion impossible (Straughair, 2019). The Emancipatory Theory of Compassion considers the effect power relationship has on gender, race, and other sociopolitical aspects. Besides, compassion and suffering take into consideration greater social issues, such as sexism and racism. The theory focuses on both the suffering of patients and nurses and goes past the nurse-patient relationship to examine suffering and compassion in populations and communities (Straughair, 2019). It argues that it is acceptable for nurses to identify approaches to reduce suffering, share power, enhance compassion, teach moral imagination, speak the unspeakable,  and enhance their voice.

The Emancipatory Theory of Compassion is similar to my nursing practice philosophy and approach to patient care since they seek to reduce patient suffering. The theory and philosophy of practice view compassion as an essential component of nursing care (Constantinides, 2019). It is considered essential for the health and wellbeing of individuals. The Emancipatory Theory reinforces my approach to care since I endeavor to reduce patients’ suffering both physically and emotionally. To provide compassionate nursing care, I first assess patients’ needs and their expectations of nursing care.

The theory influences me to align my nursing interventions to a patient’s care needs and expectations, vital in providing high-quality and appropriate nursing care. According to Dalvandi et al. (2019), compassionate care is a subjective, complex, multi-faceted, and cultural-based concept influenced by values  in the society’s and the social-political factors. Thus, I assess a patient’s expectations and perspective about health care to establish the specifications and behaviors that reflect nursing compassion when providing care. Furthermore, the Emancipatory Theory influences me to constantly seek to improve the quality of nursing care in order to improve patient outcomes and promote an improved quality of life.

Example of A Past or Current Practice and How the Worldview and the Nursing Theory Could Assist You in Resolving This Issue

In my previous organization, I provided care to a 64-year-old male patient with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The patient experienced a significant loss of muscle control resulting in weakness of lower limbs, difficulties walking and carrying out normal daily activities, frequent falls, clumsy hands, and twitching of arms and shoulders. His muscles progressively weakened, affecting his ability to chew, swallow, and speak, and he often experienced breathing difficulties. It was quite challenging to provide nursing care to the patient because he gradually developed anxiety and depressive symptoms. The patient was often aggressive and demanded to be left alone, claiming he was about to die.

The personal worldview could assist in managing this patient by treating him with compassion, respect, and dignity. I would employ my worldview by listening to the patient’s concerns, asking for his opinions regarding his care, and involving him in decision-making to make him feel that he is valued and his decisions matter to us (Sims et al., 2020). In addition, I could ensure that medical and nursing interventions provided to the patient are culturally appropriate and will not strip his dignity as a human being.

The Emancipatory Theory of Compassion would assist in caring for the patient by implementing actions that alleviate the patient’s suffering. The theory would be applied first to establish the patient’s needs and expectations of care and align the nursing and medical interventions to the needs and expectations (Constantinides, 2019). Besides, the theory would help address the emotional suffering that the patient’s family is going through seeing their loved one lose their functioning. The nurse would use the theory to find ways to reduce suffering in the family members, such as counseling and advocating for the family’s needs.

How the Worldview and the Nursing Theory Will Develop My Future Practice

The worldview and Emancipatory Theory of Compassion will significantly impact my future practice as a clinical instructor in a small area hospital. My role as a clinical instructor will be to supervise the activities of student nurses and ensure they gain the appropriate skills needed to provide quality nursing care. I will train nursing students to identify clinical features of patient health deterioration and implement the necessary nursing interventions. I will apply my worldview in training nursing students to demonstrate compassion and respect when caring for all patients regardless of their age, ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic status. I will train students on interventions they can apply to alleviate patients’ physical and emotional suffering and how to interact with a patient having challenges.

The Emancipatory Theory of Compassion will help develop my future practice by teaching nursing students how to increase their compassion when providing patient care. I will train student nurses on ways to demonstrate compassion when caring for patients and provide compassionate care. I would also teach them to use their voice to advocate for patients’ health needs and actions that will better their quality of life by minimizing suffering (Straughair, 2019). Furthermore, I will train students to apply the concepts of the Emancipatory Theory of compassion in their future nursing practice.

Conclusion

My worldview focuses on treating every person with compassion, respect, and dignity regardless of their race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. Compassion is a key element of my philosophy of nursing practice, which seeks to alleviate patients’ suffering and improve their quality of life.  My worldview aligns with the Emancipatory Theory of Compassion, which argues that compassion is essential for a person’s wellbeing and survival. The personal worldview and Emancipatory Theory of Compassion can further my future practice as a clinical instructor by training students to provide compassionate care.
