Nursing is considered widely as one of the most trusted and honorable professionals since its beginning and the increased need for nurses because of diverse population aspects. The history of nursing and nursing education is essential for nursing students and professionals to understand the present situation and predict future trends in care provision (Rosa et al., 2019). These two aspects form the basis of this short essay.

Five Key Influences Historical Influences on Nursing and Nursing Education
Nursing and nursing education history are closely intertwined with health care, medicine, and public policy on healthcare. The history entails key influences that shaped nursing profession and nursing education that they are today. Florence Nightingale remains a key figure and influence on nursing and nursing education because she is considered the pioneer of modern nursing as she started the profession during the Crimean War. In 1860, Nightingale would fund and establish the first school to train nurses (McDonald, 2021). The school was associated with King’s College, London. Nightingale introduced trained nurses who could offer quality care to patients during wars, especially in the two World Wars. Nursing was considered a female occupation and part of woman’s domestic responsibility. However, the transformation by Nightingale through founding the first nursing school changed this perspective.
The second key influence in nursing was the formation of the American Nurses Association in 1911. The association worked to enhance nursing care for soldiers (Rosa et al., 2019). The association represented registered nurses across the country. The third key influence in the nursing professional and education was the establishment of Yale Nursing School as the first independent nursing institution in the country. The school accepted women into its program. The establishment of this school was the beginning of a century of accomplishments for nursing and nursing education as more schools and programs came up to train and professionalize nursing (McDonald, 2021). A fourth influence entailed different reports like the Forward-Thinking Report on Nursing Education in 1923 and the 1925 Committee on the Grading of Nursing Schools to enhance nursing education through availing excellent curriculum resources, more accountability and oversight (Smith, 2020). The expansion of nursing education continued after the establishment of diploma schools and by 1970 the Lysaught Commission made recommendations on planning to determine the distribution of nursing programs.
By 2008 the consensus model for APRN regulation addressing licensure, accreditation, certification and education provided a framework for states to harmonize the profession and the roles of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report in 2010 advocated for removal of practice limits for nurses to enhance their roles. The report also noted nursing as the single largest part of the health care workforce. The implication is that nursing profession and nursing education are regarded as the most critical and ethical components of the health care provision and system.
Trends to Impact Nursing and Nursing Education
Different trends will impact the future of nursing and nursing education. These include the increased demand for healthcare due to an aging population, increased use of technology to enhance care delivery, and more specialization as states remove restrictions on nursing practice. The influence of IOM report in 2010 has been evident as more states now recognize nurses as primary health providers offering services to fill gaps due to physician shortage, especially in rural settings. The aging population implores nurses to offer more individualized care to health populations suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension while others require nursing and long-term care (Chang et al., 2018). The implication is that nurses continue to diversify to meet these emerging needs, especially emanating from infectious diseases. Leveraging health information technologies through application of telehealth, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence and more use of informatics implies that nursing curriculum requires changes to equip nurses with better technological skills.
Conclusion
Nursing profession and nursing education have transformed from the historical perspective. Future trends demonstrate the need for more nurses, increased and expert training to meet the gaps. Further, recognition of nurses as primary care providers will increase specialization and more research to enhance quality care delivery to patients and health populations.
