The Future of Nursing Report
The Future of Nursing Report
The report, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity, provides a comprehensive overview of how nurses can utilize research, education, and healthcare technology in addressing social issues and emerging trends in healthcare, such as health disparities, racial prejudices, and barriers to quality and equitable care. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine used research findings and data from the trend and emerging issues in healthcare from 2011-2021 to project the future of nursing and provide recommendations on improving nursing practice. The report addresses various factors and hindrances to quality patient care. The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of leading change, advancing health, and state-based action coalitions on nursing practice, nursing education, and nursing workforce development and how they continue to advance the goals of the nursing profession.

Work of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are independent institutions that use evidence-based information to give expert advice, encourage innovation and progress and point out challenges affecting the nation. Before providing recommendations, these academies conducted research and reviewed the existing reports on the social, economic, and political factors impacting quality and affordable care. Over the past decade, the nation has experienced inequities in nursing, racial injustices, trauma and crises of the pandemic to nursing and the society at large (Flaubert et al., 2021). The state of equity in the U.S. has been a matter of concern following the rise in cases of hate crimes. For instance, the death of George Floyd, being the most highlighted, caused numerous protests and motions about racial treatment in the U.S (Flaubert et al., 2021). Besides, there were concerns over decreased access to care for people with disabilities, low financial status, and low socioeconomic status. After years of evidence documentation, a committee was selected in 2019 to compile the report. The report included research findings, analysis, conclusions and recommendations on the future of nursing.
Trends in Nursing Workforce
Looming nursing shortage and technology in nursing practice are the main trends in the nursing workforce. There is a growing need for nursing healthcare due to rapid population growth and pandemics. The population is expected to rise even more in this decade, creating a health workforce imbalance (Flaubert et al., 2021). The high demand for nurses requires a distribution strategy to regions where the need is high. Besides the increased demand for care, there has been health disparities among Americans. The rapidly growing American population has experienced major health inequities that have reduced healthcare provision quality. Recruitment and retention of the nursing workforce will be key to meeting the gender, ethnic and racial composition of the diverse American population. On the other hand, the impact of COVID-19 preventive measures and policies accelerated the adoption of technologies that enable nurses to deliver care while maintaining social distancing (Wang et al., 2020). Technologies such as telehealth have improved the output of the nursing workforce in terms of patient engagement and quality of care.
Nursing education has incorporated equity and related concepts into teaching programs. Also, nursing education is quickly adopting technology as a more efficient way of addressing health disparities and meeting the needs of the nursing industry. Technological programs that encourage critical thinking, innovations and strategy in nursing practice are key to transforming healthcare. Nurses play a crucial role in leading change. Through their leaders, nurses participate in designing and implementing innovative changes to health policy. These policies promote advancement in nursing practice through care coordination and evidence-based practice.
Role of State-based Action Coalitions
State-based action coalitions encourage and promote local initiatives facilitating access to quality and affordable care. For instance, state-based action coalitions have been adopting and supporting nursing campaign initiatives with the potential of driving change locally. Such initiatives include education, research, and collaboration. The other Role is building healthier communities. Extensive focus on approaches and initiatives that promote nursing care is one of the strategies used by state-based coalitions to protect the well-being of their respective communities (“AARP Foundation, n.d). Furthermore, a State-based coalition led by nurses and nurse allies engages in programs or agreements that advance the future of nursing report recommendations. There are various ways in which state-based coalitions advance the proposals of the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report. For example, state-based coalitions encourage teamwork and care coordination in healthcare settings to improve patient care and minimize medical errors. Besides encouraging care coordination, coalitions provide training opportunities for students from different backgrounds to enhance diversity in nursing practice. Diversity helps overcome barriers to quality healthcare, such as language barriers and miscommunication (Flaubert et al., 2021). State-based coalitions also promote advanced nursing studies by providing scholarship opportunities to nursing students.
Arizona’s State-Based Coalition Initiatives
Arizona’s state-based coalition works on various initiatives such as interprofessional collaborations, nursing research, and technology. The coalition has established effective approaches to advance interprofessional collaboration between nurses and other health workers across Arizona. One of these approaches is encouraging the use of technologies such as telehealth to link nurses and other health stakeholders (“AARP Foundation, n.d). The initiative to advance interprofessional collaboration aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and evidence-based practice. Also, Arizona’s state-based coalition focuses on nursing research and technology. The coalition directs a section of its resources and efforts into research on the most effective approaches or technologies that can be employed in nursing practice to improve patient outcomes.
The primary purpose of interprofessional collaboration and nursing research initiatives is to advance the nursing profession. Interprofessional collaboration between nurses and other health stakeholders plays a crucial role in the professional development of nurses (Peltonen, et al., 2020). By sharing information and experiences, nurses are able to acquire more knowledge and skills relating to their practice. Also, interprofessional collaboration enhances care coordination within healthcare settings. On the other hand, nursing research helps discover the best approaches and technologies that can be used to advance the nursing profession.
Barriers to Advancement that Currently Exist in Arizona
Even though Arizona’s State based coalition has adopted various initiatives to advance the nursing profession, the State lacks a unifying professional identity for most nurses. Most nurses with low professional identities have been exposed to unfriendly experiences and external risks (Blackwood et al., 2019). Lack of recognition has created a poor public perception of nurses leading to poor morale and dissatisfaction among nurses. The nursing practice is mostly based on compliance with orders from the doctor and other physicians, a factor that discourages foresight and critical thinking. This makes it a major factor hindering the advancement of nursing practice in Arizona State. Besides professional recognition, most nurses lack full practice authority. A considerable percentage of advanced practice nurses lack licenses due to various factors, such as the long processes involved in order to acquire the license (Blackwood et al., 2019). This is a major drawback to the efforts of the nurses and limits advancement in the nursing practice.
Conclusion
Leading change, advancing health, and state-based coalitions significantly influence the nursing profession. The future of nursing 2020-2030 report issued by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine details the trends in the nursing profession and hindrances to quality and affordable care. The report also provides recommendations on how nurses can advance their profession to meet the needs of the evolving world. The formation of State-based action coalitions is based on the premise that the future of the nursing profession relies more on the ability of nurses at the state level to collaborate and support each other in implementing strategies and policies that promote nursing goals. Therefore, analysis of the report on the future of nursing 2020-2030, along with State-based coalition initiatives, provides a clear understanding of the hindrances to nursing practice and ways of advancing the nursing profession.
