Postpartum depression (PPD) was the selected patient/family issue for the capstone project. PPD was an issue of interest since it lowers the quality of care to women and their children and compromises their safety due to suicidal and infanticide thoughts. Besides, untreated PPD results in worse physical and mental health outcomes for the mother and the child, costing individuals and the health system billions of dollars (Moore Simas et al., 2019). My proposed intervention to address PPD was educating new mothers and their families on the signs and symptoms of PPD. The intervention sought to promote early recognition of symptoms and diagnosis of PPD and prompt initiation of treatment. This video will reflect my practicum experience, the development of the capstone project, and my personal and professional growth amid the RN-to-BSN program.

The Contribution of the Intervention to Patient or Family Satisfaction and Quality Of Life
The patient education intervention received positive feedback from patients and their families. Most women reported that they were previously not aware of PPD, specific to postpartum mothers. Besides, the patients mentioned that they could not previously differentiate between PPD and postpartum blues, and they often misinterpreted depressive mood and tearfulness in a postpartum mother as the latter. The postpartum mothers reported that the health education sessions had enlightened them on the signs and symptoms of PPD, and they could now recognize features of PPD as soon as they become apparent. Furthermore, the patients and their families mentioned that the health education on PPD helped alleviate the stigma they had about depression and mental disorders in general. The intervention enhances the patient experience by creating awareness of PPD and empowering patients to take prompt action when they recognize PPD symptoms. It also increases patient satisfaction since the patient gets discharged with adequate information on mental health disorders they are at risk of. Increased knowledge contributed to improved mental health outcomes and better quality of life for the mothers and their children.
Use of Evidence and Peer-Reviewed Literature to Plan and Implement the Capstone Project
The capstone project intervention was guided by evidence from peer-reviewed literature and clinical guidelines, which informed me on the most appropriate approach to address PPD. The two principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) informed the project as they state that: The acknowledgment that scientific evidence alone is inadequate to direct decision making; and that hierarchies exist within the existing sources of evidence (Brownson et al., 2018). I applied the first principle by incorporating evidence from peer-reviewed literature, my clinical experience, and the patients’ values and experiences when developing and implementing the patient education plan. The literature was obtained from meta-analyses, randomized clinical trials, and Cochrane Reviews. Besides, I applied the second principle by analyzing the literature to identify the most reliable evidence to guide the intervention.
The Degree to Which I Successfully Leveraged Health Care Technology in the Capstone Project
Healthcare technology was used to facilitate the implementation of the intervention and communicate with patients. Telemedicine technology was used to communicate with mothers in far proximity to the healthcare facility and educate them on features of PPD. It was also used to follow-up the postpartum mothers by assessing their mental health status in the postpartum period. Technology helped enlighten patients on PPD and facilitated early recognition and treatment of symptoms, resulting in improved health outcomes. In future practice, technology in patient education can be improved by training patients on using these technologies to maximize their use and promote the best possible outcomes (Hanach et al., 2021). For instance, patients can be guided on using Telemedicine technology and how to address common hitches when using it.
How Health Policy Influenced the Planning and Implementation of Your Capstone Project
The governmental policy on education mandates influenced the capstone project. The policy states that a mother or family member must be provided health education about PPD (Rowan et al., 2017). As a result, I ensured that the project focuses on mothers getting discharged after delivery to educate them on PPD manifestations and empower them to take prompt action when these symptoms transpire. A BSN-prepared nurse has a role in influencing the development and improvement of health policy through research and innovations in healthcare (Safari et al., 2020). As a BSN nurse, I have the role of educating the public and state policymakers on issues in healthcare and ways to address the needed changes to improve health outcomes. Therefore, I can educate the public and legislators on approaches to address PPD through policies that foster health providers to educate, screen, and refer patients with PPD to mental health practitioners.
Whether the Capstone Project Outcomes Matched the Initial Predictions
The expected outcomes from the project included having an increased awareness about PPD among postpartum mothers. I also predicted an increased number of women who seek mental health consultation regarding PPD symptoms. Besides, I expected that there would be an increase in the number of patients diagnosed and initiated on PPD treatment. The project met the expectations evidenced by the increased number of women who verbalized the signs and symptoms of PPD on discharge. In addition, an increased number of postpartum mothers consulted their PCPs whether they were having signs of PPD after having low moods. However, we fell short of the expectation of having an increased number of patients diagnosed and initiated on PPD treatment. This can be because the project was short-term, and the outcomes may be apparent in the long term.
The project’s intervention will be adopted as a best practice in the organization as it promotes early diagnosis of PPD. Nurses will be involved in the practice and will be required to educate mothers on PPD before discharge. Besides, the mothers will be informed on where they can get help if they develop the PPD symptoms. The intervention on patient education is generalizable to all patient settings since PPD is prevalent globally. Nurses in other settings can use the intervention to promote better health outcomes in women.
Personal and Professional Growth throughout the Capstone Project and the RN-To-BSN Program
The capstone project and the RN-to-BSN program have significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. The project has improved my skills in applying nursing knowledge to identify and address a health issue. It has also enhanced my ability to use EBP to improve the quality of care of patients, safety, and lower costs. Besides, the project has enhanced my communication skills with patients, and I can now effectively interact and collaborate with them in their plan of care. The RN-to-BSN program has improved my practice in critical thinking, leadership, management, ethics, and professional standards in nursing. I am proud that my ethical practice has significantly improved, and I now consider the ethical implication of each intervention. Besides, before implementing an action, I assess whether it will benefit the patient and the potential consequences.
Conclusion
The intervention on patient education led to the early recognition of symptoms and diagnosis of PPD and prompt initiation of treatment. It led to an increased awareness of PPD among mothers, which empowered them to seek help on mental health issues resulting in improved outcomes. Telemedicine facilitated the delivery of health education and communication with patients. The capstone has improved my communication and EBP skills, while the program has improved my critical thinking skills and ethical practice.
