PRAC 6645 Psychotherapy and multiple modalities: Practicum Experience Plan (PEP)

As you establish your goals and objectives for this course, you are committing to an organized plan that will frame your practicum experience in a clinical setting, including planned activities, assessment, and achievement of defined outcomes. In particular, they must address the categories of clinical reasoning, quality in your clinical specialty, and interpersonal collaborative practice.

For this Assignment, you will consider the areas you aim to focus on to gain practical experience as an advanced practice nurse. Then, you will develop a Practicum Experience Plan (PEP) containing the objectives you will fulfill in order to achieve your aims. In this practicum experience, when developing your goals and objectives, be sure to keep psychotherapy approaches and techniques in mind.

To Prepare

  • Review your Clinical Skills Self-Assessment Form you submitted last week and think about areas for which you would like to gain application-level experience and/or continued growth as an advanced practice nurse. How can your experiences in the practicum help you achieve these aims?
  • Review the information related to developing objectives provided in this week’s Learning Resources. Your practicum learning objectives that you want to achieve during your practicum experience must be:
    • Specific
    • Measurable
    • Attainable
    • Results-focused
    • Time-bound
    • Reflective of the higher-order domains of Bloom’s taxonomy (i.e., application level and above)

Note: Please make sure your objectives are individualized and outlined in your Practicum Experience Plan (PEP). While you may add previous objectives to continue to work toward. You must have 3 new objectives for each class, each quarter.

  • Discuss your professional aims and your proposed practicum objectives with your Preceptor to ascertain if the necessary resources are available at your practicum site.
  • Select one nursing theory and one counseling/psychotherapy theory to best guide your clinical practice. Explain why you selected these theories. Support your approach with evidence-based literature.
  • Create a timeline of practicum activities that demonstrates how you plan to meet these goals and objectives based on your practicum requirements.

Assignment

Record the required information in each area of the Practicum Experience Plan template, including 3–4 measurable practicum learning objectives you will use to facilitate your learning during the practicum experience.

By Day 7

Submit the Practicum Experience Plan for assessment and Faculty approval.

When your Instructor has approved your plan, forward the signed PEP to your Preceptor and retain a copy for your records.

Summary of strengths:

The self-assessment offers an opportunity to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses as an individual embarks on a new experience. As such, from the assessment, it was evident that  I have various areas of strength. For example, my strength lies in the comprehensive psychiatric evaluation skills in various areas, like identification of psychiatric illness symptoms and signs, functional assessment performance and interpretation and carrying out physical exams and interval history, among others. In addition, my strength has also been revealed in creating and choosing differential diagnosis list and arriving at diagnosis based on DSM5 as well as observing differences between the abnormal or normal psychological and physiological changes based on age. Other areas of strength were also noted in various aspects, such as therapeutic skills and treatment, self-assessment skills, and professional skills.

Opportunities for growth:

The self-assessment exercise also revealed various areas which presented opportunities to grow. These areas were revealed by identifying aspects in which I am still not confident. One of the opportunities to grow includes creating medication plans using clinical practice guidelines which include symptom management, informed consent process, developmental aspects, patient preference, risk, benefit and financial considerations.  Under pharmacotherapeutics skills, I can also improve in formulation of individualized care plans based on patient age, identification of legal dilemmas and potential resolution and the interpretation of the screening instruments’ results appropriately. Therefore, it is important that the practicum goals be built around these areas, which present opportunities to grow.

Now, write three to four (3–4) possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.

1.      Goal:  To identify and select appropriate evidence based clinical practice guidelines for medication within the first four weeks of practicum

a.      Objective:  To study literature sources on clinical evidence based guidelines for medication administration for patients undergoing mental illness

b.     Objective: To discuss with my preceptor on the most effective strategies for choosing appropriate pharmalogical interventions

c.      Objective: To appropriately select at least one medication guideline every week

2.      Goal: To explore and identify therapeutic modality concepts across the lifespan and formulated effective individualized therapeutic plans by the end of week six of practicum  experience

a.      Objective: To study literature on the concepts of therapeutic modalities

b.     Objective: complete quizzes on therapeutic modalities to enhance my knowledge

c.      Objective: To formulate at least two individualized therapeutic plans every week.

3.      Goal: To study and enhance my skills and knowledge on the ethical and legal dilemmas experienced in the care of mental illness patients across the life span within the first six weeks of my practicum experience.

a.      Objective: To discuss with the senior members of staff  regarding their experience with ethical and legal dilemmas and how they deal with them

b.     Objective: To collaborate with my mentor on how to deal with the ethical and legal dilemmas

c.      Objective: Document every incidence of ethical or legal dilemma experienced during the practicum experience.

Practicum Experience Plan

Practicum experience offers a nursing student an opportunity to work with patients in a clinical setting to gain appropriate knowledge relevant to the requirements of being an advanced practice nurse. A practicum plan is key in guiding the practicum experience as appropriate. As part of the practicum plan, it is key that an individual comes up with appropriate objectives that can help guide the practicum experience. As such, the purpose of this assignment is to formulate a practicum experience plan with goals that can be used as a guide for the practicum experience. In addition, this write-up will also detail the timeline or schedule with the planned total practicum hours.
