Week 5: Discussion Big Data Risks and Rewards
Big data is a critical component of clinical system. One potential benefit of big data in a clinical system is improvement of operational efficiency as it is part of business intelligence strategy to evaluate patient admission rates and analysis of staff efficiency (Kelly et al., 2019). Health care organizations and providers can reduce the cost of care and offer better services by leveraging predictive analytics (Pastorino et al., 2018). Big data assists in reducing medication errors as it enhances administrative performance and lowers the rate if readmissions.

While big data provides benefits to clinical systems, it also comes with challenges and potential risks. One of the challenges is the need for data protection to prevent potential hacking of the system. Effective data protection requires clinical system to ensure privacy and security and prevent any unauthorized access from third parties (Dash et al., 2019). The implication is that clinical systems must deal with issues like privacy, security and comply with governance standards required by existing legal frameworks like HIPAA and HITECH. Breach of data is a problem that affects the integrity of data and compromises a system’s ability to remain secure.
The challenges of using big data requires providers and organizations to develop and deploy evidence-based strategies that will ensure data safety and integrity. An effective strategy that can help in mitigating the challenges is training and workshops for employees in the system to understand the use of big data and how to protect it from unauthorized access (Ginsburg et al., 2018). If employees do not understand the role and value of big data and are not willing to change existing processes, they cannot guarantee its protection or security. Therefore, it is essential for providers to train their employees effectively on the use of big data.

By Day 3 of Week 5
Post a description of at least one potential benefit of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why. Then, describe at least one potential challenge or risk of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why. Propose at least one strategy you have experienced, observed, or researched that may effectively mitigate the challenges or risks of using big data you described. Be specific and provide examples.
