Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is grounded on my perception of the role of a nurse educator in impacting the attitude, thoughts, behavior, and action of the next generation of nurses. Learning is a life-long process whereby learners pursue knowledge in an environment of guidance, support, free inquiry, and expression. Nursing education aims to equip nurses with appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitudes with clinical competency. Education is vital in producing nurses who will integrate evidence-based science into clinical practice (Satoh et al., 2021). Furthermore, education equips learners with interpersonal and communication skills that they can utilize when dealing with clients, families, community members, and other professionals. Education also aims to develop learners’ leadership skills and empower them to be change agents in their communities.

Student Learning

As a nurse educator, I must assist learners and nurses in identifying their individual learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses. Learners have different learning preferences, which, when employed in teaching, facilitate the understanding of concepts. A learner’s learning style impacts the level one understands and performs educational activities (Pivač et al., 2021). Learners understand more effectively when they visualize, hear, read, or when hands-on. An educator needs to identify students’ learning styles and preferences to modify the teaching style.

Learning Facilitation

Educators and learners are collaborators in the teaching and learning process. I believe that learning is facilitated when the educator allows learners to bring their life experiences, which enhances the learning atmosphere. The faculty should foster and support collaborative efforts with learners in various scholarly activities within a wide range of education contexts to facilitate learning (Satoh et al., 2021). Student learning is also facilitated when learners synthesize information from various sources and integrate it into learning, research, and practice.

Role of the Nurse Educator

The nurse educator is responsible for employing leadership roles to contribute to the academic community and be a role model to learners. I believe that to be an effective nurse educator, one needs to target students’ way of thinking and doing and their attitude toward learning and nursing practice. By doing this, the nurse educator enables learners to meet future challenges, including technological changes, which confront health care in the 21st century (Mukan et al., 2021). In addition, the educator is obligated to equip learners with knowledge, skills, and attitude that will empower them to develop sustainable solutions to address the challenges in their communities (Satoh et al., 2020). I plan to implement the teaching philosophy and integrate the N.E competencies into my professional practice by encouraging and supporting learners in developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills. I will also guide them in developing sustainable interventions to elevate the standard of nursing practice.
