Teaching Strategies
The current health practice requires highly skilled and adequately prepared nurses to handle complex patient care demands. Accordingly, nurse educators should prepare nurses to handle this role effectively by imparting skills using appropriate teaching strategies. Ghasemi et al. (2020) advised nurse educators to use active teaching strategies to enhance student engagement. Nurses can also use similar approaches to educate patients on various health matters. The objective is to improve literacy and enable learners to apply the knowledge in real-life situations.

The three teaching strategies I am most comfortable using are the lecture method, simulation, and concept-based learning. I am comfortable with them since I can implement each competently and assess learning outcomes effectively. From a teaching viewpoint, lecturing entails outlining and presenting the content to students through reciting. Bristol et al. (2019) found the lecture method effective in teaching basic nursing skills and clinical concepts. Simulation is primarily about recreating a clinical scenario in the learning environment. For nursing students, the recreated scenario should mimic regular patient care environments. Concept mapping involves demonstrating relationships between ideas (concepts). It is an effective method of helping learners to understand relationships between facts. These methods can be used independently or jointly as situations allow.
Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy classifies learning into different levels according to the achieved outcomes. The levels include remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating (Oeste-Reiß, 2019). Educators should strive to equip learners with higher-order skills. Based on this taxonomy, the lecture method falls under the understanding level since it allows learners to comprehend and express knowledge. Simulation can be classified under the application level since learners apply theoretical knowledge to experiment concepts. Concept mapping entails analyzing since, by presenting ideas visually, students must analyze information, evaluate it, and think critically.
