Evidence-based practice projects and nursing research form two fundamental aspects of patient care and patient outcome improvements. Therefore the implementation of EBP and carrying out research should appropriately be accomplished to enhance the chances of better outcomes. One of the aspects is to use frameworks or models in guiding the two processes. Frameworks or models play a significant role. For example, they offer a theoretical basis or approach which the implementers or researchers can use to gain a deeper understanding of how best the projects can be implemented with minimal chances of failure (Tucker, 2019). The models can also offer phases or stages to use in implementing an EBP project by stating succinctly what needs to be done at each phase or stage for successful implementation. The models or frameworks can also offer a step-by-step guide on how to approach a particular clinical issue and eventually implement potential solutions which can help in improving patient outcomes (Tucker & Gallagher-Ford, 2019).

As discussed earlier, models or frameworks have a significant role to play in EBP and research. However, the choice of a wrong or inappropriate model or framework can easily lead to bias. For example, choosing the wrong framework may lead to an occurrence where the research or improvement goals fail to address the identified clinical or research problem hence leading to bias (Moullin et al.,2020). In addition, an incorrect framework can lead to flawed implementation of research or project hence misinterpretation of the research results. The implication is that the researchers may end up using too much of their opinions to explain the misinterpreted results, which also results in research bias. Therefore, it is important for researchers and changes implementers to perform a thorough study or review of the models or frameworks to choose the best for a particular project or research.

Implementation of evidence-based practice projects can be accomplished using various specific models. Such models are key in offering the foundation upon which the EBP project can successfully be implemented. The implication is that there is a need for nurse practitioners or professionals to possess adequate knowledge regarding such models. Two of the most used models are Kurt Lewin’s change model and Kotter’s change management model. These two models have been key in implementing evidence-based practice projects. Kotter’s model is made up of eight phases which include creating urgency, team formulation, communicating, getting the vision correct, moving, incorporating change, and focusing on the short-term goals (Baloh et al.,2018). This model offers eight stages of implementing the EBP project and change initiatives to enhance successful implementation.
According to Lewin, the implementation of a change initiative or effort can be achieved in three main phases or stages. The stages include unfreezing, change, and refreezing. In addition, there are forces involved in the change process. While some of the forces restrain change, others are driving forces. Therefore, a change only takes place when the driving forces overcome the restraining forces (Hussain et al.,2018). The first phase, unfreezing, involves creating the urgent need for change and informing the stakeholders why a change initiative would be necessary. The second phase involves change. The implication is that the proposed initiative is implemented to help bring change. The last phase entails refreezing, where the implemented change is sustained to form part of the organization’s normal operations and culture. In this phase, the leaders use various strategies to support and motivate the employees and staff to maintain the new practice (Muldoon, 2020). Lewin’s model is the most appropriate model for implementing the proposed change since it offers simple steps to follow and also offers a framework for sustaining the change.
