NSG 604 Module X: Discussion 1
Epidemiological studies create the basis for disease control and prevention since they track the prevalence of a disease, characterize its natural history, and identify determinants or causes of the disease. They play a primary role in developing preventive medicine by defining risk factors and targets for disease prevention (Matranga et al., 2021). Besides, epidemiological studies guide in establishing the severity of a health problem, defining its distribution and associated factors, and measuring health outcomes of risk factors or behaviors (Windle et al., 2019). They play a vital role, particularly in defining a health problem, from the distribution of a disease and its related risk factor to its burden.

Sound public health policy is guided by relevant and timely information. It uses quantitative evidence data that can take various forms, including scientific information from peer-reviewed journals, individual programs, and policies. Epidemiological studies produce quantitative evidence data making them ideal for supporting the development of policies (Windle et al., 2019). They can be applied to support policies at the local level by providing input, evidence, and recommendations about disease control strategies, disease regulations, and health policies. Epidemiological studies, through the study of causes of disease and establishing risk factors, can recommend potential policies to address specific health problems. Banks et al. (2023) explain that applying epidemiological studies in policy and practice can help prevent significant morbidity and mortality.
Public health policy is the main means through which epidemiological studies achieve their effects, contributing to profound impacts on individuals’ daily lives. Proposed policy interventions must be tested. Epidemiological studies strengthen the confidence with which studies and bodies of evidence support conclusions about whether policy changes at the local level will foster changes in population health outcomes (Alba et al., 2020). Furthermore, epidemiological studies in policy development help to identify interventions that can be implemented to mitigate health problems in the population.

Explain why you feel it is important to use epidemiological studies to support policy development at the local, national, or global level. How does this benefit population health?
When you respond to your classmates, offer other reasons why epidemiologic studies support policy work and how we, as DNP-prepared nurses, can use this knowledge to improve the health of our communities.
Post your initial response by Wednesday at 11:59 PM EST. Respond to two students by Saturday at 11:59 PM EST. The initial discussion post and discussion responses occur on three different calendar days of each electronic week. All responses should be a minimum of 300 words, scholarly written, APA formatted (with some exceptions due to limitations in the D2L editor) and referenced. A minimum of 2 references are required (other than the course textbook). These are not the complete guidelines for participating in discussions. Please refer to the Grading Rubric for Online Discussion found in the Course Resources module.
