The concept of accountability is a critical aspect for nurses as care providers and an integral part of the healthcare delivery system. The American Nurses Association (ANA) through its code of conduct implores nurses to be accountable for their actions, decisions, and choices to both their colleagues and patients (Smith & Karakashian, 2018). As professionals, accountability means that a nurse should be answerable to herself/himself for own actions. Professional accountability implies that a nurse makes a commitment to herself/himself and to their careers so that they can grow, advance, improve and adapt to their work settings (Chesterton et al., 2021). The ANA asserts that nurses are accountable and responsible for the quality of care in their practice. The implication is that nurses should take ownership of their actions and hold themselves accountable not at individual level only but also as members of a collective professional team. Therefore, nurses should be ready for the consequences of their actions and any decision that they make in care provision (Jensen et al., 2019). Integrity is a core aspect of professional accountability and nurses can ensure that they demonstrate it in their practices and attitudes towards their patients and multidisciplinary teams.

Nurses also demonstrate accountability when they accept shared and collective approaches while working in other nursing and inter-professional teams to enhance quality patient outcomes (Chesterton et al., 2021). Nurses can also show accountability when they comply with workplace policies and procedures. Making decisions to offer patient care by leveraging on EBP interventions sets nurses as accountable and ready to improve the overall care provision.
