Practice Issue and PICOT Statement
The selected practice issue is infection control and prevention. Nurses play a crucial role in the promotion of optimum outcomes of the populations they care. They implement evidence-based interventions that minimize the risk of infections among the populations they care. Public health issues such as the Covid19 increased the need for health organizations to adopt interventions that prevent disease spread among hospitalized patients. The provision of training and education opportunities is effective in promoting infection control and prevention. However, its effectiveness has not been explored in my practice site, hence, the focus of this project. The PICOT statement is as follows:

Will the provision of structured education and training on infection control and prevention (I) among nurses on the reduction of hospital-acquired infection (P) reduce hospital-acquired infection rate by 50% (O) as compared to nurses who follow usual care with no structured education and training on infection control (C) within 6-8 weeks (T)?

Purpose The purpose of this study was to educate and train nurses about infection control practices and assess the impact of training and if the training made any changes in the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infection and intravenous line-related infections.
Research Method The study was a prospective interventional research.
Participants The participants in the study comprised 105 grade 1 and 2 nurses working in a tertiary hospital in India.
Data Collection Methods Self-administered, structured questionnaires were used for data collection. The questionnaires had 35 questions that assessed knowledge, attitude, and practices related to hospital acquired infections. Consent was obtained before data collection. Pre-intervention questionnaires were given before educating nurses on prevention of hospital acquired infections. The participants also received information booklets. Post-intervention data was then obtained from the study participants after a week and a month of the intervention. The data was entered in the MS Excel spreadsheet, coded, and cleaned for errors. The analysis was done using SPSS version 20.0.
Study Findings 105 participants were used in the research. The study results showed that there was a reduction in the incidence of intravenous line-related infections despite being not significant. The results also revealed no change in the incidence rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection after intervention.
Limitations of the Study The study was prospective, implying that other factors could have affected its outcomes. The sample population was small, which affects generalizability of the findings. The study also did not assess the retention of knowledge by the participants over a long period.
Relevance to Practice Issue and/or Proposed Intervention The study shows that the provision of training and education to nurses on infection control and prevention increases their knowledge, attitude and skills. It also reduces hospital-acquired infections, hence, supporting the proposed project.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of an educational module on nosocomial infections control measures among nurses working in Yemen.
Research Method The study was a single-blinded randomized hospital-based trial.
Participants The study participants comprised 540 nurses who were assigned to either intervention or waitlist group. Foreign nurses were excluded from the research.
Data Collection Methods The data for this research was obtained using self-administered questionnaires. The questionnaires had 45 items that collected and assessed the knowledge and practice of nosocomial-infection control measures among the participants. The data was collected at the three stages during the investigation period. They included pre-evaluation, post-intervention, and follow-up evaluation data periods.
Study Findings The study results showed that the intervention groups had statistical significant difference in knowledge scores when compared to the waitlist group. The difference was significant immediately post-intervention, at three months, and at the end of the intervention. The practice scores in the intervention group were also statistically significant as compared to the waitlist group. Face-to-face training was more effective as compared to modules only in improving nurses’ knowledge and practices related to nosocomial infections control in the interventions groups as compared to the waitlist group.
Limitations of the Study The study has the weakness of being conducted in a region. The results may not reflect the experiences of nurses working in other regions in Yemen and globally. The study also used public hospitals. The results may not be translated to private hospitals.
Relevance to Practice Issue and/or Proposed Intervention The article demonstrates the significance of educating nurses in the prevention of nosocomial infections. It also supports the feasibility of training and education in improving knowledge and skills of the nurses on issues related to infection control and prevention.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the effects of two education programs for infection control.
Research Method The research utilized a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design.
Participants The participants were 62 undergraduate nursing students in their third year of study.
Data Collection Methods Self-report questionnaires were used to obtain preliminary survey information. Post-doc survey data was obtained using the same questionnaires immediately after the delivery of education interventions. Two intensive care  nurses with more than three years of experience in clinical care used a video recorded on the day of intervention implementation to evaluate infection control performance.
Study Findings The results of the study showed that educational interventions improve knowledge, skills, and attitude among nurses on infection control. Both groups that received educational interventions had statistically significant increase in knowledge, awareness about standard precautions and performance related to infection control. The education programs also influenced standard precaution compliance among the participants.
Limitations of the Study The study used a small sample size, which affects the generalizability of the study findings.
Relevance to Practice Issue and/or Proposed Intervention The article is relevant to the practice issue. It supports the use of educational interventions in enhancing infection control. The article supports that educational interventions improve nurses’ knowledge, skills, and compliance with infection control and prevention.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an in-service education program for improving nurses’ performance in the application of infection control measures in rural hospitals.
Research Method The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design.
Participants The participants comprised nurses working in rural facilities in Egypt. A sample of 100 nurses was selected to participate in the study.
Data Collection Methods The researchers collected data using a structured interview guide and observational checklist.
Study Findings About half of the nurses demonstrated correct performance level in infection control pre-program and improved to 88.0% in the post-program implementation period. Statistically significant differences between the knowledge sub-scales and sub-scales were seen in pre and post-program periods. The results also demonstrated highly statistically significant differences in nurses’ correct performance score level during the pre and post-program phases.
Limitations of the Study The researchers used a small sample size, which affect the translation of the results to a larger population. The results were obtained from nurses working in rural settings, affecting the generalizability of the findings to other settings.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine the awareness level of nurses in primary healthcare centers about infection control and prevention and develop an educational program to improve their awareness and determine the relationship between awareness and socio-demographic characteristics.
Research Method The researchers used a quasi-experimental study design.
Participants The participants in this research comprised 60 nurses selected from two sectors of primary healthcare settings.
Data Collection Methods The data for this study was collected using a questionnaire that had two sections. The first section obtained data on nurses’ social and demographic aspects. The second section obtained data on nurses’ awareness and knowledge on infection control prevention measures.
Study Findings The results of the study showed that there were significant improvements in knowledge and awareness level following the implementation of the educational intervention. There were also significant differences in nurses’ awareness and demographic characteristics between pre-test and post-test periods. The awareness level among nurses on infection control and prevention measures was low before the intervention, increasing to a good level following the educational intervention.
Limitations of the Study The study used a small sample size. The period of follow-up was also inadequate to provide insights into the sustainability of the changes observed following the educational intervention.
Relevance to Practice Issue and/or Proposed Intervention The article shows that educational interventions improve awareness, knowledge, and skills of nurses on issues related to infection control and prevention. As a result, it is relevant to the proposed intervention.
