Primary and secondary data inform continuous quality improvement in healthcare. They, however, have several limitations that should be considered in practice. Primary data has cost limitations. Obtaining primary data is expensive since researchers have to undertake fieldwork and spend time with data sources (Johnson &Sollecito, 2018). There is also the high cost incurred in data analysis and management, making it less desirable for complex issues in healthcare. Primary data also has the limitation of sample size. Large sample size is needed for primary data to be generalizable. Obtaining such a sample size may be challenging in undertaking most primary studies. Developing a clear, concise, and appropriate approach to collecting primary data may also be a challenge in practice (Johnson &Sollecito, 2018). The last issue with primary data is accessibility. It may be daunting to access the appropriate population to provide the required primary data for healthcare.

Secondary data also has its limitations. One of the limitations is the lack of specificity in data. Accordingly, secondary data may fail to answer the researcher’s specific objectives. As a result, the validity and reliability of secondary data are threatened. The other limitation with secondary data is the failure to reflect current experiences related to an issue.
