Intervention Presentation and Capstone Video Reflection Essay
Intervention Presentation and Capstone Video Reflection Essay
Baccalaureate-prepared nurses get chances to reflect on their contributions to patient outcomes during their practicums. In their study, Speed et al. (2018) observes that creating and sharing video reflections after such practicum experiences is essential as it enhances learning and development of innovative approaches to developing evidence-based practice interventions to address health population’s problems. The purpose of this paper is to present the intervention that I implemented in the healthcare setting during my clinical experience and its effects on the targeted health population. The paper also develops a video reflection to share and enhance learning not just for me but for colleagues in the profession and practice environment.
Intervention Presentation and Capstone Video Reflection Essay
PART ONE: Healthcare Intervention and Its Impacts
Intervention
In the Capstone Project, the intervention that I identified was provision of education to workers from different industries susceptible to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The intervention aimed at improving their level of awareness and the type of mitigations to reduce the risk of getting the disease. Based on research studies, the prevalence of COPD remains significantly high among workers exposed to smoke in their industries (Barbosa et al., 2022). The intervention also included targeting individual workers who also active smokers and collaborating with their organizational managers to develop strategies to reduce not just smoking but also exposure. I selected this group because of the increased susceptibility and embarked on developing educational interventions and provision of sufficient and updated information to increase their awareness. Through sufficient information access and resources within their organizations and communities, these individuals can reduce and prevent their susceptibility to COPD (Bollmeier & Hartmann, 2020). The intervention was essential as it allowed the workers to develop a positive approach to smoke and implore their organizations to develop measures to reduce the amount and the level of exposure.
A core aspect of the intervention was leveraging health information technologies (HIT) and tools like telehealth and smart devices to offer knowledge and develop better customized interventions to reduce exposure to smoke and development as well as increased prevalence of COPD, especially among workers in different industrial estates within the state and around the country. The intervention included a need to change one’s lifestyle, especially active smokers among the targeted workers, as one strategy of reducing their susceptibility and vulnerability to the problem.
PART TWO: Capstone Video Reflection
The education and awareness intervention that I proposed had substantial positive effects on the target group. Engaging the workers in their diverse settings and their organizational management through consistent communication offered a platform to educate them on the important role and purposes of ensuring that they have better information and change their lifestyles, especially smoking cessation to reduce susceptibility to the disease. The intervention served as an effective approach to alter perceptions among the workers and implored organizations to create policies that focus on reduction of smoke exposure as well as even totally banning smoking zones within their premises.
The success of the intervention was evident because of the positive feedback that the facility obtained from the workers and their managers after two months of the implementation. For instance, the banning of smoking zones in this organizations meant that they developed policies to criminalize the habit. It also meant that they allocated resources to rehabilitate those quitting smoking and also invested more in their machinery and equipment to make their environments friendlier to workers (Larsen et al., 2020). The number of patients visiting the facility exhibiting COPD signs and symptoms reduced drastically after the implementation, a clear indication of the positive effects of the program. The implication is that the intervention improved the quality of life for the targeted workers as they reduced their susceptibility to infections while those already diagnosed got resources to ensure that their lives are better managed despite the condition.
Use of Evidence and Peer-Reviewed Literature in Planning and Implementation of Capstone Project
The whole capstone project’s planning and implementation were founded on comprehensive analysis and application of peer-reviewed literature and evidence-based interventions. I used different nursing-related sources and databases that offered peer-reviewed and scholarly research evidence on the intervention and its success. Because many workers were not aware of the lethal effects of the industrial smoke and smoking to them, I leveraged these sources to plan effective implementation of the intervention. The evidence-based sources offered me sufficient and backed up information and data that I used to convince the different organizational managers to alter their perceptions and create worker-friendly policies to protect them from smoke, including cigarette smoke. The implication is that through the use of these sources, I attained positive project outcomes since the pieces easily convinced the targeted group of the efficacy of the intervention.
Degree of Leveraging Health Care Technology in Capstone Project
Health care technology remains a core aspect of quality care delivery and providers leverage it to improve inter-professional collaboration, interoperability, particularly through electronic health records (EHRs) systems, and to provide information to patients as well as increase efficiency and workflow (Larsen et al., 2020). In this case, I leveraged health care technology to implement the capstone project intervention in tackling COPD among workers. A core aspect of this technology was searching for research evidence through the different online databases and peer-reviewed sources.
Telehealth integration also helped the project as I offered information through applications and small devices for the workers that could not get the chance to come to the practice setting physically (Donner et al., 2021). The use of this technology allowed the targeted workers to monitor their health status, incorporate better interventions through sharing of their health history and information, and were able to reach out to me at the right time to offer more insights on quality ways to reduce susceptibility to COPD in their workplaces. I leveraged technologies to improve understanding of the different aspects of the problem and ways to implement various strategies in the organizations like through policy development and inclusion of all stakeholders in the process (Gaveikaite et al., 2021). Imperatively, technology played a critical role in implementation of this capstone project as it eased communication, collaboration and efficiency in all the activities.
Effects of Health Policy on Planning and Implementation of Capstone Project
As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, it was essential to remain sensitive to my role in health policy development and implementation which had a significant impact on the planning and implementation of this project. The planning and implementation adhered to existing health policies on different aspects like quality and safety measures, patient data and information protection through HIPAA requirements and state regulations about the scope of practice authority for nurses. For instance, the project adhered to the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act (PSQIA), the provisions of Affordable Care Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) to assure the target group of improved outcomes and the protection of their data (Farokhzadian et al., 2019). The nursing code of conduct developed by the American Nurses Association and the requirements of the state board of nursing through the Nursing Act were also essential in ensuring autonomy, beneficence, fidelity, non-maleficence and responsibility for every action. The project was aimed at ensuring that it meets the Quadruple Aim framework and focus on primary care interventions. Therefore, the policies played a fundamental role in the realization of this intervention.
Matching the Initial Predictions
The results of the capstone project aligned with my initial predictions which demonstrates evidence of successful planning and execution of the initiative. Various aspects of the project can be associated with the eventual outcomes. Firstly, it enlightened the majority of the workers on the need to reduce smoke exposure and quit smoking altogether. Secondly, it allowed changes in policies across organizations as the different managements sought to improve the welfare of their employees. Thirdly, the intervention was critical in helping lower not just the prevalence but also the cost burden associated with COPD among workers, their families, organizations and the entire health care system in the country.
Personal and Professional Growth Through the Capstone Project and the BSN Program
The capstone project has contributed significantly to my personal and professional development and growth as well as the attainment of the BSN program. Through the project, I have enhanced my communication skills, developed better collaboration skills, increased my perspectives on public health issues, and developed better ways to conduct in-depth research to get better evidence and implement requisite interventions. The capstone project demonstrates the need for one to focus on interdisciplinary practices, embrace inter-professional collaborations and attain efficiency, and deliver quality patient-centered care.
I have explored different scholarly and nursing journals and resources, increased my knowledge on COPD management and improved my competencies, especially cultural competence, and use of evidence-based practice interventions (CDC, 2022). The realization that one can change groups and their perceptions about healthcare issues is satisfying and motivating for me. The leveraging of healthcare technology and integration of health policies to attain quality care are all amazing aspects of the experience from this capstone project. I now appreciate the role of ethics, policy development and need to work collaboratively through seamless flow of information and data to make better decisions and create plans of care that meet patient needs.
Conclusion
The capstone project offered a detailed analysis of implementing the proposed intervention and its effects on the targeted population, especially the salient benefits of the initiative. Based on this analysis, I believe that the proposed intervention is effective and should be adopted by the different organizations to reduce COPD prevalence among their workers in different cadres. The project offers a host of learning for better career and professional development as a BSN-prepared nurse to impact health promotion within the clinical setting and in the community.
