Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal Implementation Plan NUR 590
Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal Implementation Plan NUR 590
Assessment Description
Among the most vital stages of an evidence-based project is the implementation phase. Therefore, it is imperative that a concise plan is made prior so that it reflects every aspect of the implementation phase. The implementation plan should be good enough to help the investigator implement various phases or stages of the project appropriately. A good implementation plan also fosters achieving or fulfilling the set objectives and goals (Edie, 2017). Therefore, this part of the project focuses on an implementation plan formulation. Various aspects of the formulation plan will be discussed, including setting, accessing the potential subjects, an appropriate timeline, resource list, and budget, how to deliver the intervention, instruments and methods, and the stakeholders.

The Setting and How to Access the Potential Subjects
The setting that has been selected for this project is the intensive care units at the facility. Since the project focuses on reducing the incidences of CAUTI, ICUs have been chosen as the ideal setting since patients admitted to these units are more likely to use indwelling catheters. Therefore, a change in the use of catheters will be effected in these units, where the use of indwelling catheters will be minimized. In addition, in cases catheters will have to be used, then the antibiotic-impregnated catheters will be used. The potential research subjects will be accessed by recruiting every patient admitted into the ICU. The data to be applied to measure the efficacy of the proposed solution will be patient-based. Before the project commences, the investigator will have to get approval from the facility.
The Proposed Timeline
As part of an evidence-based project, it is important to formulate an appropriate timeline. A timeline is key as it ensures that everything stays on track, for instance, the major activities that support the project as wells as every phase of the project. It also gives a rough idea of when the project should be completed, helping the investigators focus and ensure that everything stays on track (Milner, 2021). The proposed timeline for implementing the project is six months. Relevant activities will be accomplished during this time, including project implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and stakeholder feedback. In addition, necessary corrective measures will be taken to help the project be a success. As shown in the appendix, the major activities forming part of the timeline include formulating and submitting the proposal, proposal approval, coming up with the stakeholder team and strategies, training, project implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
The Budget and Resource List
The successful implementation of any project heavily hinges on the financial plan put in place in terms of the budget and the resource list. Therefore, such a plan is key in showing what financial needs are required and possibly how to get them. As earlier indicated, the project seeks a change in practice targeting minimal use of indwelling catheters and using antibiotic-impregnated catheters. The implication is that the nurses will need to be trained; hence the financial resources for training are needed. Human resources will also be a key part of the project (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). As part of the project, the trainers, nurses, the management, and other hospital staff connected to the facility’s ICU will be key as part of the human resources. The estimated budget for the project is $60,000.
The Project Design
The proposed design for the project is the quantitative design. Quantitative data collection methods will be used to obtain the appropriate data for testing the efficacy of the project, as baseline data will be compared with the number of CAUTIs developed upon the implementation of the proposed solution. In addition, the data obtained for the control group will also be compared with that of the intervention group. The quantitative design will allow easier use of statistical analysis to obtain results to determine how effective the project is (Wood & Haber, 2018).
Methods and Instruments
Various methods and instruments will be used in the project, especially in data collections and analysis. Some of the targeted data collection instruments include clinical records of the patients during the hospitalization period. The other one is questionnaires administered to the patients a few days after the catheter removal. Questionnaires are important as they are easy to administer, and in this case, they will be key in obtaining relevant information on patients such as the use of antibiotics, catheter discomfort as either severe, moderate, or mild, and the symptoms associated with the urinary tract infection.
Method of Delivering the Intervention
One of the factors that impact the success of an intervention is how the intervention is delivered. Therefore, it is critical to have a method for delivering the intervention. This proposed solution or intervention will be accomplished in phases. One of the very first phases to be undertaken or accomplished is the needs assessment phase (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021). Needs assessment offers an opportunity to evaluate the nurses’ level of awareness concerning the development of CAUTI, its impacts, why it is necessary to prevent their development, and some of the appropriate ways of controlling and managing them. Needs assessment gives the necessary data required in coming up with the strategy.
The other part of delivering the intervention will involve educating and training the nursing staff. While catheters are used in the ICUs, the proposed project proposes a change to use antibiotic-impregnated catheters and limited use of catheters. Therefore, there will be a need to train and educate the staff on the same to ensure the correct use of the new catheters and using the appropriate judgment of when to take out the catheters and when not to use the catheters. Upon completing the education and training sessions, the next phase of the intervention will be the implementation of the proposed protocol (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021). In this phase, nurses will be heavily involved as they will be responsible for using the new catheters and removing catheters when necessary, but in consultation with the physicians. As part of this stage, the nurses will be supervised to ensure that they are correctly using the new antibiotic-impregnated catheters.
The Stakeholders
Stakeholders form an important part of projects such as evidence-based projects since they take part in implementing the project and achieving goals (Cottrell et al., 2017). In some cases, they are either indirectly or directly impacted by the project. As such, it is important to identify them. Some of them include the patients admitted to the ICU, as they will be the project’s central focus. The nurses and other clinical staff working and connecting with the intensive care units will be key in driving the project forward. The physicians are also part of the stakeholders. The facility leaders and administrators are also part of the stakeholders as they will have to give permission to implement the project at the facility.
Potential Barriers and Strategies of overcoming them.
A proposed project usually faces many barriers which have to be overcome if the project has to succeed (Li et al., 2019). One of the principal reasons for the rise of barriers is the need to change a particular protocol or practice to achieve the goals. The implication is that there is a need to identify such barriers in time and come up with ways to mitigate them. Among the possible barriers is the lack of the desired support by the facility’s administrators as leaders. This could be a major problem as it can undermine the success of the project (Duncombe, 2018). Among the strategies that can be used to overcome the barrier is to align the goals of the project with the organization’s objectives and mission. In some cases, the nursing staff and other staff can also resist the proposed change as they would prefer to go on with their normal routines (Alatawi et al., 2020). Therefore, it is important to use various strategies such as effective communication and increased involvement to obtain their buy-in.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Catheter-associated urinary tract infection forms part of the most prevalent health care setting conditions. However, CAUTI is a largely preventable healthcare-associated infection among admitted patients. Therefore, this latest part of the proposed intervention has addressed the implementation process. Coming up with the implementation plan is key as it ensures that the project’s progress is on course.
