By offering top-notch therapeutic services, the counseling industry aims to improve and enhance the general public’s quality of life (Baltrinic et al., 2021). Academic counselors are more inclined to consult their peers for help on matters ranging from managing graduate students to how to handle sensitive research material (Lenz et al., 2022). Ethics in psychology serve as a foundation for what is deemed good or wrong and are generally centered on interactions between patients and therapists. The purpose of this discussion is to examine the ACA Ethics Code and find a requirement that relates to evidence-based practice in culturally competent counseling practice.

The ACA Code of Ethics lists the criterion on personal values (A.4.b) as one that relates to evidence-based practice in culturally competent counseling practice (ACA, 2014). Counselors are expected to refrain from imposing their values, traits, beliefs, and behaviors on their clients, trainees, and research participants, according to the standard (ACA, 2014). Counselors should seek training in areas where they run the danger of imposing their ideals rather than imposing their attitudes, beliefs, and actions. When the counselor’s values diverge from those of the client, this should occur (ACA, 2014). Counselors should consistently refrain from forcing their views on their clients or trainees and instead look to educate themselves on the issues to achieve clarity and choose the most effective strategy for handling the challenges at hand.

Implications for Practice

This standard serves as a guide for counselors as they work to improve their knowledge to better assist their clients and prevent damage. When working with clients who have different viewpoints from their own, counseling professionals should continually expand their understanding of views, values, traits, and behaviors (NBCC | National Board for Certified Counselors & Affiliates, n.d.). Counselors are more likely to provide culturally competent counseling when they make an effort to grasp these values and beliefs, which will benefit the well-being of their clients, students, and research participants (Brown, 2020). Enhancing and promoting evidence-based practice also benefits from improving one’s knowledge of and understanding of others.

Summary

Ethics in psychology serve as a foundation for what is deemed good or wrong and are generally centered on interactions between patients and therapists. As a result, counselors and other specialization-related professionals must abide by the many ethical standards that specify how they should behave in particular contexts. Counselors must adhere to the ACA Code of Ethics section on personal values (A.4.b) while supporting evidence-based practice

To Prepare

  • Review the ACA Ethics Code excluding Section G, which is specific to conducting research or the ASCA Code of Ethics.
  • Identify a standard that is related to evidence-based practice or applies to the use or application of research in culturally competent counseling practice.
  • In your video script initial discussion posting, please respond to the following:
    • Identify and describe one specific ACA or ASCA ethical standard by section/number and state the code.
    • Explain the implications of the code when working as a counseling professional.

include in the script, the Standard you selected, along with the number and description.

For your discussion this week, put on your clinician hat and dig into the Code of Ethics (ACA, 2014).  The lens through which you should approach the code is with consideration for the use of empirical evidence or counseling research in counseling practice. There is one entire section of the code that is designated to conducting research, but you should look beyond section G and identify one standard that relates to the use of research in counseling work.  It won’t be hard as evidence-based practice is threaded throughout the code.

Do not use example

For example, in the ACA Ethics Code (2014) Section C.2.d. emphasis is placed on clinician’s monitoring their effectiveness. The standard states “Counselors continually monitor their effectiveness as professionals and take steps to improve when necessary. Counselors take reasonable steps to seek peer supervision to evaluate their efficacy as counselors” (p. 8). This ethical standard has implications both in assessing the effectiveness of your own counseling practice and in your ability to accurately interpret and apply counseling research. Consider your obligation to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment you provide and to make changes if necessary.

Be sure to keep your video script between 3 to 5 minutes in length!

Now, take a look at the Code of Ethics with consideration for how it applies to the use of research in your counseling practice. I would recommend that you develop your video script around these headings:

Ethical Standard

In this section, analyze the Code of Ethics and then explain which one you selected, cite the code by section/number and explain how it is related to evidence-based practice or the use of research in counseling. (Do not use a code from Section G)

Implications for Practice

Explain the implications of the code for you as a counselor in your chosen discipline.

Summary

Wrap up your post by summarizing the importance of using research to support your counseling work and how the ACA ethics code promotes evidence-based practice.
