Bullying is one of the common problems witnessed in various settings, clinical settings, or nursing care included. The focus of this write-up is to explore bullying as a nursing problem. The effects of the issues on care quality and patient safety and various practice and professional strategies for correcting the issue will be explored. Besides, a suitable leadership style that can be used in addressing the issue will also be explored.

Bullying As a Nursing Problem
Bullying is one of the issues that has been experienced in many fields, nursing practice included. Even though efforts have been undertaken by different stakeholders, the problem still persists even in the subtlest of forms. Surprisingly the issue is more common in the nursing field, with many individuals feeling that the problem should be sorted using various ways since the problem has not attracted the magnitude of attention it should be getting (Karatuna et al., 2020). Workplace bullying takes the form of repetitive and enduring actions towards a person or people by another individual or people with power over them. Workplace bullying can take various forms, such as rumor spreading, retention of information, and threats. In most cases, the person perpetrating the act could be the victim’s superior, colleague, or in some cases, a subordinate.
In most cases, workplace bullying in the clinical setting could result in various adverse impacts on the victims and, by extension, the patients getting nursing care from the nurses. Indeed, bullying as a problem has been associated with various impairments such as physical health impairment and health impairment. In addition, bullying has also been shown to result in work associated issues like diminished job commitment, reduced job satisfaction, and more desire to lead to be in a position of power (Karatuna et al., 2020). When nurses experience bullying, the effects could be far-reaching and extended to patient care in the form of poor performances of nursing care. Such poor performances can easily lead to medication and medical errors, which can, in turn, lead to more adverse impacts, such as the death of a patient.

The adverse impact of bullying, especially in clinical care settings, has led to the nursing professional bodies coming up with standards and guidelines that can be applied in addressing the problem. Among the professional bodies that have such professional guidelines and statement is the American Nurse Association (ANA). This professional body has various statements covering incivility, violence, and workplace bullying(Kim et al., 2019). According to ANA, the nursing staff should aim at creating an ethical culture and friendly environment with civility and kindness. In addition, they should treat their colleagues and co-workers with respect and dignity. These will ensure that any attempts at or forms of bullying do not take place (Kim et al., 2019). The nurses need to be made aware of and always reminded of the professional standards of practice and purpose to show respect to everyone. These strategies can go a long way in helping eliminate or reduce the chances of bullying.
The Role Played by Nursing Managers and Nursing Leaders to Address Bullying
The nursing managers and nursing leaders are usually in the clinical sites and, therefore, have first-hand information of cases of bullying. As such, aside from the federal, state, local regulations and the professional bodies’ efforts, therefore they can take a central role in addressing the issue of bullying. Among the strategies they can undertake is that their position of power gives them an advantage of confronting the perpetrators and discussing what makes them perpetrate bullying, and reminding them that such actions are all against the nursing standards practice (Blackwood et al., 2017). The nurse leaders and managers can also support the bullying victims, counsel and coach them. Support is key in helping the victim to cope better and handle the situation better when it arises or occurs.
Coaching entails the nursing leaders and managers encouraging those who are being bullied into taking active roles towards formulating strategies of dealing with bullying and potentially arising conflicts. The leaders can go further in mediating between the conflicting individuals. Through the mediation process, those who advance bullying can possibly realize their mistakes and wrongdoing and potentially reconcile with the victims of the bullying act. When nurse managers and leaders help resolve the cases of bullying, both victims and the perpetrators can get confident and gain more trust with the leadership (Blackwood et al., 2017). The result will be an improved work effort and increased patient care and safety. Leadership theories can be instrumental in explaining the kind of nurse leaders who can better control and manage the problem of workplace bullying. One kind of leadership style that can be instrumental is transformational leadership. Translational leaders strive to create environments devoid of bullying and harassment since they instill greater autonomy, power, and independence in the individuals that they lead.
Other Aspects that the Managers and Leaders Can Initiate
There are various additional aspects that leaders can be engaged in to help address the issue of bullying. These additional aspects can be used alongside the issues discussed earlier. One of such issues is offering mandatory training. The mandatory training can be formulated to be as frequent as possible; taking maybe quarterly, half a year, or yearly; the leaders then prompt the staff and other members to attend. The training should be strategic enough to have topics such as bullying, strategies to end bullying, and the impacts of bullying (Blackwood et al., 2017). Such training will be key in helping the victims to better deal with the issue and deter the potential perpetrators from carrying out bullying acts. Various codes of conduct can then be formulated to make the staff know the repercussions of advancing bullying and depicting behaviors that break the codes of conduct.
A Suitable Leadership Style to Address the Challenge
Leadership theories can be key in identifying an appropriate leadership style to fit in different situations and in sorting out various challenges. Leadership styles can allow the leaders to prevent, stop or even permit acts such as bullying. Therefore, the leadership style exhibited by a leader can impact bullying in the work setting. One of the leadership styles that has been shown to impact the direction which a problem takes is the transformational leadership style (Woodrow & guest, 2017). This leadership style has been shown to lower the chances of workplace bullying incidences by acting as role models to foster supportive working behaviors. Transformational leaders are more effective as compared to other styles, such as the Laissez-faire style that has been associated with lower job satisfaction, worker burnout, and other health problems. In addition, a transformational leader appreciates and supports employees; therefore, such a style can hugely control bullying.

Effective leadership and management approaches are key in ensuring addressing various issues in the healthcare setting. As it standards, bullying in the workplace needs to be addressed as it leads to poor clinical performance, affecting patient care and safety. Leaders have to use effective leadership and management strategies to address the clinical challenges and improve the work environment.
