Discussion Question: Nurse/Patient Empowerment Paper
Patient empowerment is crucial in achieving the desired care outcomes. Nurses utilize several interventions to achieve optimum patient empowerment. One of the strategies is patient education. Patient education improves their understanding of the effective management for optimum care outcomes (Garattini &Padula, 2018). It also motivates patients to adopt lifestyles and behaviors to minimize their exposure to disease-causing hazards in their environment. The other strategy is patient participation in decision-making. Nurses utilize shared and participative decision-making to achieve their desired patient empowerment goals. They prioritize the patients’ needs, values, and preferences (Garattini &Padula, 2018). They also incorporate them in the decisions made to proactively empower patients to address their care needs.

Nurses also ensure cultural competence in promoting patient empowerment. They provide culturally appropriate care to optimize the care outcomes. They ensure the care given aligns with their patients’ cultural values, beliefs, norms, and practices to empower them. Nurses also utilize inter-disciplinary collaboration (Ippolito et al., 2019). They provide collaborative care, focusing on realizingthe actual and potential needs of their patients. Through collaboration, the diverse patient needs are met, hence, their empowerment in the care process. The last strategy is encouraging the optimum use of the limited resources in the care process. Accordingly, nurses assist their patients in identifying the resources in their communities that can meet their care needs (Ippolito et al., 2019). As a result, patients are empowered to utilize their resources and abilities to meet their health needs.
The NDNQI data from dashboards can support nurse empowerment in practice. The data provides nurses with insights into the effectiveness of their care interventions. Nurses also use the data to develop continuous quality improvement initiatives to improve the quality and safety indicators in the care process. Nurses also utilize the data to implement evidence-based practice interventions for optimum care outcomes. Consequently, they are empowered to play a central role in improving safety and quality data in their organizations (Azevedo & Cruz, 2021). My organization empowered the nursing staff using quality improvement data. It supports nurse-led initiatives that improve quality and safety indicators such as hospital-acquired infections in the institution. An example of howI have empowered patients is by educating them on self-management practices for diabetes type 2.

Nurse/Patient Empowerment
As a nurse, you are the individual who has the ability to empower patients in the decision-making process pertaining to their health care. In addition, you are in a unique position to empower your nursing colleagues to improve job satisfaction and use performance indicator data from dashboards to effect social change.
In this week’s Resources, you examined both the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) and the key role nurses play as advocates for patient rights. To assist nurses in being better prepared for this role, programs such as Patient Care Partnership provide guidance.
For this Discussion, you will analyze the use of quality improvement data and discuss how this data can help empower both patients and nurses. Review the Patient Care Partnership information presented in this week’s Learning Resources. In addition, reflect on the media presentation and the information shared by Ms. Manna on patients’ rights.
By Day 3
Respond to the following:
• What are the best strategies the nurse can employ to empower patients and support patients’ rights to improve quality of care? (Some considerations to keep in mind may include: providing information on effectiveness, risks, and benefits of alternative treatments.)
• In what ways can NDNQI data from dashboards or quality improvement data be used to support nurse empowerment in practice?
• How has your institution empowered the nursing staff through the use of quality improvement data?
• Provide an example of how you have personally empowered either a patient or a fellow nurse.
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.
