Change is unavoidable in our lives, sometimes described as a life constant. When there are conflicting emotions or views and inappropriate change planning and management structures, attempts to effect change are met with significant resistance, rendering the plans for change unsuccessful. The change agent must be ready to deal with conflicting emotions among individuals, balance, and connect with all aspects of the organization that the change will affect (Marquis & Huston, 2017). In the presented scenario, I could utilize transformational leadership to identify the root cause of the discrepancies in views about spiritual care and encourage the committee members to collaborate and work together.

Transformational leaders treat people with compassion and care, encourage people to do things for the right reasons, and inspire others with their vision (Cherry & Jacob, 2019). Through transformational leadership, managers instill a common vision and desired end in their followers. I would encourage the committee members to identify their desired ends and share them with others. Then, I would guide them in identifying common themes, areas of disagreement, and strategies to mitigate the opposing views. We would come up with common strategies to follow and make agreements that support the desire to attain the same positive outcomes through the process.

Change Theory

I would use Lewin’s change theory to address the presented concerns. The theory identifies three phases of change: unfreezing, movement, and refreezing. Barrow et al. (2021) state that unfreezing involves change agents enabling followers to recognize the need for change. In this phase, I would gather enough information to accurately assess the issue and create awareness among the committee members. In the movement stage, I would assist members in formulating goals and objectives, exploring the available alternatives, and implementing the best strategy. After reaching a common ground on the role played by spiritual care, I would encourage the committee members to support the change.
