Healthcare organizations utilize healthcare technologies to respond efficiently to their needs. Health information technologies enable healthcare organizations to leverage the existing opportunities for their competitive edge. Nurses and other healthcare providers help their organizations to identify crucial needs and strategies needed to address them. They also assist in the prioritization of tasks needed to achieve organizational excellence. Therefore, this paper explores the business need and problem statement and their application in strategy development in an organization.

Business Need and Its Purpose

A business need refers to the gaps in the current state of an organization and its goals. It encompasses the changes that organizations need to implement to achieve their goals in addressing the needs of their target populations or markets. A business need has several organizational purposes. First, it guides organizational strategies. The identified needs inform the needed strategies in an organization (Hassmiller & Pulcini, 2020). Business needs also provide information on organizational performance and competitiveness. The identification of needs enables healthcare organizations to rate their performance in their markets compared to their competitors. Business needs also shape an organization’s vision for change (Hassmiller & Pulcini, 2020). Organizations develop visions and missions that align with the identified needs in the market.

Problem Statement

A problem statement refers to an issue that should be addressed in an organization through a change initiative. Writing a problem statement involves several steps. They include describing how things should be undertaken in an organization, explaining the problem and its importance, effects, proposing a solution, its benefits, and a summary of the problem and solution. The information about how things should be undertaken in the organization contextualizes the problem. It also guides the identification of a problem in organizational systems and processes and its effects on performance, productivity, and competitiveness. Information about the effects of the problem increases the need and relevance for the proposed change. The potential benefits of the proposed change should be provided to persuade organizational stakeholders (DeNisco, 2019). In undertaking the above, conciseness and use of evidence-based data should be considered.

Use of Business Need and Problem Statement

Business need and problem statement are used to develop strategies that support healthcare organizations’ informatics issues. Accordingly, problem statement and business need guide the development of a clear action plan that can drive successful change. They help organizational stakeholders to prioritize goals, optimize resource utilization, and make informed decisions on enhancing organizational efficiency in addressing the informatics issues. They also strengthen the confidence that staffs have towards addressing informatics issues. Business need and problem statement data provide organizational stakeholders a better understanding of what they need to achieve the organizational strategies. As a result, they can coordinate team activities efficiently and purposively to enhance transparency and credibility in addressing the identified issues(Burton & Ormrod, 2020). Therefore, business need and problem statement are important in addressing identified informatics issues in healthcare.

The Identified Issue

The identified business need in my practicum setting is the lack of integrated electronic health records to address medication errors. Therefore, the following are goals of focus in the change initiatives to be implemented in the setting:

1. To implement integrated electronic health records in the next three months for use in reducing medication error rates in the institution
2. To empower staff to use integrated electronic health records by the end of two months to help prevent and reduce the medication error rate in the setting.

Conclusion

Overall, business need and problem statement are important in any healthcare organization. They guide strategy implementation and provider confidence in addressing informatics issues in their settings. Nurses should have an adept understanding of using the business need and problem statement to drive change. Therefore, business need and problem statement will be used to inform the need for addressing the identified issue in the practice site.
