Imagery and the Language of Poetry
Imagery are literary tools used by writers in works such as poems and novels where the author highly describes the subject or the idea to create a vivid image of what they are talking about in the readers’ heads. It is also used to convey the desired sensations and emotions from the writer to the reader, thus allowing the writing to achieve its intended goal of communication. In ethics, Linda Pastan extensively uses images. In one instance, she asks, “If there were a fire in a museum, which would you save, a Rembrandt painting or an old woman who hadn’t many years left anyhow? Restless on hard chairs caring little for pictures or old age”. The Image creates emphasis. While describing the art, she simply describes it as “a Rembrandt painting”. However, while describing the old woman, she provides more details. As such, the focus is not on the painting but on the woman.

The images work together to form a coherent pattern. At first, the woman is just a stranger. But the more details the author provides, the less strange she becomes. Pastan writes that, at first, she would take the face of her grandmother. In that case, the reader forms a different opinion about whether the image or the painting needs saving. At this point, the reader is inclined to prioritize the lady. Towards the end, the woman is no-longer a stranger, but the reader sees the woman as themselves. The question that comes to their minds is whether they believe they are worth saving or not, when the only choice is to save a painting or themselves. The emotion that Pastan wishes to convey to the reader is empathy. That is, the ability to feel the pain of another person as one’s own. The image contributes to the overall meaning of the poem. Pastan titled it “ethics”. She implies that, empathy is the most important emotion when making ethical decisions.
