Complementary and alternative medicine is defined as the category of various medical and healthcare practices, and the use of products considered a nonmainstream approach is not part and parcel of the standard medical practice. Most cancer patients use CAM to cope with various challenges associated with cancer treatment (Morrissey et al., 2021). For instance, some use CAM to help them cope with stress and worries due to cancer treatment. At the same time, others use CAM as a way of participating in their health and trying to cure the disease. Notably, people using CAM therapy tend to be influenced by factors such as culture, religious beliefs, and the need to easily access these products to fully participate in getting better.

According to the US National and Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health, most individuals using CAM therapy are women compared to men. According to studies, about 77% of patients with cancer use pharmacological CAM, while 71% of patients use non-pharmacological CAM. Based on the report, only 62% of adults in the United States is shown to use various form of CAM, but when prayer is excluded but 36% of these individuals use CAM therapy (Morrissey et al., 2021). Again, the most frequent types of CAM used by these individuals are vitamins, prayer, and herbal products. However, prayer is the most dominant type of CAM used by these individuals (Guillaud et al., 2019). Thus, the percentage of individuals using CAM with prayer is about 62%, specifically adults of age 18 and above. At the same time, about 36% of these individuals use CAM, excluding prayer for healing.

Additionally, the most dominant CAM therapy used is natural products related to individuals’ education and economic status. For instance, people with higher education and high income tend to have higher compliance with chemotherapy schedules (Guillaud et al., 2019). Additionally, factors such as education level and employment status contribute to accessing CAM therapy. Because individuals with higher education levels and high incomes tend to have access to sources regarding CAM, and they always like to participate in their treatment.
