The main focus of nurse practitioners is provision of quality care to patients. However, this week’s learning implores nurses to have a new way of providing skilled care by incorporating cultural competence. Understanding patients’ culture is important in enhancing care provision as it allows nurses to offer more holistic and patient-centered care. Caring and culture are intertwined as nurses can only prove that they offer quality care when they understand, appreciate, and integrate cultural aspects of their patients into the plans of care for their patients (Dyches et al., 2019). Further, the week’s learning shows that expanding ones understanding of culture and how people interact enhances their professional ability to make effective and meaningful relationships with patients in different situations and care settings.

The increasing diversity in population is a motivation enough for nurses to integrate several aspects of cultural competence in their roles and responsibilities. Nurse practitioners should acquire and practice cultural competent care to effective listen to the patient’s health concerns and needs or preferences (Park & Yoo, 2019). Through this understanding, they can treat their conditions in acceptable ways and communicate responsively and respectfully based on patient’s culture. Effective decision making requires a comprehensive appreciation of cultural norms among nurses and their patients.

I have attained this week’s objective by increasing my cultural competence through attending an online diversity talk by the professional association aimed at enhancing culturally-competent nursing care. The personal values challenged through the activity include need for embracing diversity and addressing personal biases and stereotypes about certain cultural aspects of care (Sharifi et al., 2019). The values that I seek to reaffirm include respect, love, fidelity and integrity while offering compassionate care to diverse patients. After this leaning, I want to reconsider my entire understanding of the diversity concept and how it affects the overall provision of care to patient populations across care continuum.
