Functional Patterns
Functional patterns provide a comprehensive way of assessing patients while using the nursing process. Khatiban et al. (2019) note that the nursing process is a significant element that enables nurses to improve patient-specific and scientific care. Additionally, the functional health patterns provide nurses with a holistic format of assessing patients in the 11 health patterns (Lium, 2021). The patterns have different questions that inherently reflect how unique each client is and assess their weaknesses and strengths. Nurses can easily pick the health patterns and use them in assessing their patients.

Elimination Complexities
Patients suffering from elimination complexity diseases have trouble getting rid of wastes from their bodies, either through the digestive or urinary systems. Sharma and Bhutta (2020) assert that helping patients with elimination is an important nurses’ role with a huge medical significance and psychosocial effect on the quality of life in the lives of their patients. The nurse can utilize health patterns to understand better the health concerns of individuals suffering from elimination complexity conditions to provide holistic and quality care to improve the life quality of their clients.
Applying the Health Patterns
In this case, I will consider a patient suffering from chronic renal failure. The nurse can use the health perception-health management pattern to elicit how patients perceive their health condition. This is an essential component of management because it predicts how a patient will comply with the treatment strategies. Using the nutritional-metabolic pattern, the nurse elicits the patterns of fluid and food consumption in relation to the patient’s metabolic requirements. It helps addressthe nutritional deficits of the client caused by the condition. Additionally, the nurse uses the coping-stress tolerance pattern to identify the effectiveness of the patient’s coping mechanisms. The patient requires great psychological care due to the different complex management strategies they may require (Hinkle & Cheever, 2018). Therefore, using the health patterns enables the nurse to understand the patient better and provide comprehensive and holistic care.

Topic 3 DQ 2
Discuss how functional patterns help a nurse understand the current and past state of health for a patient. Using a condition or disease associated with an elimination complexity, provide an example.
