Discussion Question

Psoriasis and eczema are both inflammatory diseases although psoriasis is more severe. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that results in raised and scaly patches while eczema is a chronic skin disease that causes itchy patches on the skin. The patches may become erythematous due to the continued irritation. The pathological development of psoriasis is characterized by hyperproliferation of the keratinocytes leading to a high turnover rate in the epidermal cells (Chovatiya & Silverberg, 2019).The condition could be genetically induced or be caused by immunological factors. Comparatively, eczema is also genetically induced. The condition is associated with the failure in the regulation of the immune response that leads to excessive skin allergy and inflammation.

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory disease that is also linked with mental disorders such as depression, eating disorders, anxiety, and disrupted sleeping patterns among others. The condition results from the complex interaction between the skin and immune system regulation. Also, genetic and environmental factors may be implicated (Chovatiya & Silverberg, 2019). Atopic dermatitis results from the disruptions in both the immune and non-immune components of the skin that compromises the complex matrix of the epidermal keratinocytes and the lipid components in the skin. Patients with atopic dermatitis are also likely to have impaired tight junctions. Atopic dermatitis is commonly associated with asthma and other allergic reactions. Studies have also shown that atopic dermatitis originates from allergic rhinitis and asthma. Therefore, the findings suggest that people with atopic dermatitis are most likely to have asthmatic attacks due to the hypersensitive immune response. Both asthma and atopic dermatitis are highly prevalent in industrialized areas where people are exposed to allergens.
