The concept of culture, ethnicity, and acculturation relate in the sense that they are all crucial in establishing the identity of an individual. The concept of culture is the distinguishing pattern of values, behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs shared by a particular population or society. People of a given cultural group have common characteristics that differentiate them from other groups. As such, culture provides individuals with a sense of belonging to a certain group and develops limitations or boundaries where people of a similar culture operate (Banks, 2020). On the other hand, ethnicity relates to the genetic background of people. It is majorly about the biological and racial aspects of a group of people. It connotes a collective cultural and social heritage that is passed down to every successive generation (Banks, 2020). Based on these definitions, the outstanding distinction between culture and ethnicity is that ethnicity is associated with the fact of belonging to a given group of individuals with mutual culture, physical features, or ancestry, while culture relates to a traditional form or social behavior adhered to by people.

Finally, the concept of acculturation connotes the adaptation of other people’s cultural values, principles, and behaviors by an individual (Garcia et al., 2020). Acculturation can be caused by various factors. For instance, a person who migrates to another country may decide to adopt the existing cultural practices in that country and abandon the previous cultural behaviors and ideas. If this happens, such a person is said to be acculturated. However, acculturation can only occur when a person adapts to the practices of a new culture but does not depend on the time a person spends in a foreign land.  Some people can never abandon their native cultural customs despite migrating to foreign nations.
