The article selected for this assignment, by Nissen et al. (2018), is based on the fact that COPD and asthma share several traits and symptoms, making it challenging to differentiate between the two in basic care. In independent validation studies, patients with validated COPD and asthma were found in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), and the illnesses were verified by looking at GP questionnaires. Based on CPRD coding, GP surveys, and requested extra information, the prevalence of concomitant COPD and asthma in validated instances of either condition was studied. The researchers used quantitative research techniques, such as questionnaires, to collect data.

The restriction strategy was used by the researcher to limit confounding participant characteristics by limiting the study populations to just those who have participated in prior validation studies. To validate the registration of COPD and asthma in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, questionnaires were distributed to the GPs of potential COPD and asthma patients (Nissen et al., (2018). The individual publications for each validation study include a complete list of the selection criteria. The internal validity of this study’s design is jeopardized by the history, selection, testing, and interaction between the experimental variable and the selection. The researchers used filler tasks and questionnaires to conceal the study’s objective as a technique of combating testing threats and demand characteristics.

The fundamental drawback of using a structured questionnaire with closed-ended questions for quantitative research is that it only produces the findings that are specified in the study proposal. As a consequence, the conclusions might not always precisely depict the actual circumstances. The researcher is aware of this limitation and is disclosing that although this data is thought to be representative of the entire UK population, the results of this study are solely valid to the entries in the CPRD. As a result, experimental studies often have better internal validity than observational studies since the researchers have more control over the study design. To establish external validity, the researchers made sure that the study populations only comprised participants from previous validation studies.
