Summary of strengths:
I have gained a lot of knowledge and skills necessary for improving psychiatric assessments and the treatment of mental diseases through my work as a nurse practitioner during the last few years. Having had prior professional experience, I feel pretty secure in my clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment skills. The favorable patient response has convinced me that my biggest strength is in verbal communication. The patient’s history is crucial for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of those with mental illness (Aggarwal et al., 2022). By using effective communication techniques like active listening and maintaining eye contact, I’ve been able to build a stronger rapport with my patients and give them the confidence to discuss their symptoms and experiences. I am also sympathetic, which is important while caring for patients with mental illnesses.

Opportunities for growth:
Having largely worked with adults, I find it difficult to assess and treat children and adolescents, especially when administering medications. Some mental diseases impact children and adults differently, and as a result, they should be treated differently. Nevertheless, there is little research on the use of medicines to treat the majority of mental diseases in this vulnerable demographic (Kverno & Frosch, 2022). I, therefore, need to learn more about diagnosing, treating, and evaluating mental diseases in children and adolescents. I must thus improve my documentation skills when proposing individuals for psychiatric consultation to deploy appropriate screening instruments and evaluate the results. I do, however, plan to learn as much as I can and advance my professionalism in serving both the children and the adult populations with mental diseases with the help of supervision in areas where shortcomings have been found throughout my practicum experience. |
Now, write three to four (3–4) possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
1. Goal: To be able to perform psychiatric interviews for at least 5 children and 5 adults every week for the next 8 weeks without supervision (International Council of Nurses, 2020).
a. Objective: Remaining focused on the pertinent facts. Reading and practicing what I’m learning, with the support of my preceptor, will help me learn and perfect the psychiatric interview. b. Objective: Using both closed- and open-ended inquiries, during interviews. c. Objective: Have my preceptor evaluate how much time I spend on each patient and how I can improve it, through daily evaluation.
2. Goal: For the next eight weeks, be able to accurately document recommendations for psychiatric consultations for at least two patients every week without supervision (Aggarwal et al., 2022). a. Objective: Keep a notepad handy for important information. Request that my preceptor reviews my timing and documentation daily. b. Objective: Monitor how much time each session took and learn skills to reduce the amount of time spent on given questions by reviewing psychiatric interview books from learning resources and preceptor evaluations. c. Objective: Review documentation available in learning resources to assist me in staying on track with what is required to document daily.
3. Goal: To locate and use academic resources and clinical practice recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of at least 5 kids and teenagers each week for the following eight weeks without supervision (International Council of Nurses, 2020). a. Objective: Identify resources that are available to families in their communities and determine what needs to be referred to, if necessary. b. Objective: Include the child or teenager in the care strategy. Consider their preferences and, if appropriate, make an effort to include them in the plan. c. Objective: Ask my preceptor for assistance as needed regarding the resources she uses for these populations.
4. Goal: To gather thorough patient histories for at least five children and teenagers who appear with psychiatric symptoms each week for the next eight weeks without supervision (Shain et al., 2018). a. Objective: Comply with the instructions in the learning resource books and guidelines for conducting psychiatric interviews of children and adolescents. b. Objective: Examine the intake data in preparation for future visits. In line with the data from the intake, ask the child or teenager and their parents or carers the right questions. c. Objective: Get useful feedback on a daily or weekly basis from my preceptor regarding how well I take a medical history of these populations.
