My worldview is shaped by a variety of factors including religion, culture, philosophical beliefs and life experience. Across these influences, I have reached one fundamental conclusion: the value of each human person is inherent and intrinsic. Everything from belief in the sanctity of life to acknowledgement of our individual uniqueness gives us an inborn dignity that others may or may not recognize, but which we all share (Grand Canyon University, 2021). This universal worth allows us to accept each other without stereotypes or prejudice, appreciate diversity for its contribution to positive growth and development and even treat strangers with kindness no matter their background.

My position on controversial bioethical issues such as abortion, designer babies, and stem cell research can be greatly influenced by personal views on the value of human life. For example, as someone who believes that life begins at conception, I see abortion as a morally unacceptable practice that involves taking of innocent life. Similarly, I believe that the use of genetic engineering or other technologies to create “designer babies” is unethical as the practice interferes with the value of human life and the importance of preserving genetic diversity. Further, I see the practice as a slippery slope towards a dystopian future where the rich and powerful control the traits of future generations.

Taking a position on bioethical issues such as abortion, designer babies, and stem cell research can be greatly informed by personal views on the value of human life. From my perspective, life begins at conception and I therefore see abortion as an unacceptable action that involves taking innocent life. Additionally, using genetic engineering or other technologies to create “designer babies” is highly unethical in my opinion for several reasons (Grand Canyon University, 2021). By manipulating genes for the purpose of obtaining certain outcomes in offspring, we are undermining the value of human life and disregarding the importance of preserving genetic diversity (Peng et al., 2020). Furthermore, this practice may have far-reaching social repercussions – bringing us dangerously close to a dystopian reality where those with power have control over future generations through their manipulation of genetics.

Stem cell research has become a highly discussable issue in the world today, and one’s worldview plays an essential role in forming individual opinions and stances. As someone who deeply values human life, I cannot support the use of embryonic stem cells as it often requires some level of destruction or disruption of human embryos. I believe it is possible to find ethical alternatives to this type of research for those cases where stem cells are necessary; these alternatives should be fully explored instead of blindly accepting what has been done in the past. Considering the deep moral implications that stem cell research holds, I am confident that more discussions over this subject can eventually lead us to a grounded resolution with respect to human life.
