The human life and sanctity of life, as viewed from the Christian perspective, impact the course of action taken in various health cases of individuals. While in some cases, some of these Christian perspectives are in agreement with the medical and personal views, at times, they are in conflict, which then calls for exploring better strategies to handle them (Clarke, 2023). In the case study assigned, Jessica is a thirty-year-old female who immigrated to the USA with her husband from Mexico City and, after some time, finds out that she is pregnant. A visit to the doctor revealed that the fetus had got fetal abnormality and complexity. While the husband is not for the idea of the doctor revealing the diagnostic results to his wife, the doctor fulfills his obligation and reveals the result. Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to explore this case and discuss various aspects.

The Christian View of the Nature of the Human Person, the Compatible Moral Status Theory, and the Relationship With Intrinsic Human Value and Dignity

            The Christian view of the nature of the human person is built on the idea that every individual has been made in God’s likeness and image. As such, there is a belief that God skillfully created every individual and that there are five main aspects that explain human beings’ nature with Christian anthropology as the framework (Entwistle, 2021). The five aspects include openness, dignity, social characteristic, unique attributes, unity, and freedom. The moral status theory, which is compatible with this view, is the human properties theory. According to this theory, human attributes or properties are responsible for crowning the moral status of the human being. Human beings are the only creatures that were offered moral status. When an individual is conceived, they obtain moral status. Therefore, this theory is compatible with the Christian view of the nature of the human person.

The intrinsic human value and dignity are connected to the propositions of human properties theory and the Christian perspective. Based on the Christian worldview, everyone has been created by God, and therefore they possess spiritual and physical attributes. Hence human beings can form a relationship with God, and everybody is made in God’s likeness and image. The implication is that everyone deserves dignity and respect.

The Theories Being Used by the Individuals

The individuals in this case study used various theories. Dr. Wilson performed various tests which revealed abnormality of the fetus, which led him to offer the family all the options available. However, he supports the idea of aborting the fetus as informed by his vast medical knowledge. Therefore, the theory used by the doctor is the cognitive properties theory (Entwistle, 2021). According to this theory, an individual has to demonstrate rationality and awareness levels to have moral status, something which the fetus lacks. Therefore, this theory influenced the doctor’s recommendation of aborting the fetus since the fetus has no moral status.

The aunt, Maria, is not for the idea of aborting the fetus and speaks to Jessica to think about the responsibilities and obligations of a mother to a child and show respect. Therefore, the theory applied here is based on relationships (Entwistle, 2021). Jessica feels connected with the fetus and she also has a relationship with her God. As such, from this perspective, the fetus has a moral status; hence, aborting is wrong. The divine command theory also indicates that God is the creator and, therefore, should decide mortality and morality.

Marco is aware of the potential financial burden that the fetus, if born with the complications, would bring to the family. They share the same belief with the wife, who also believes that life is sacred hence having a conflict. Marco is ready to support his wife in whichever decision she makes. Hence the theory is based on relationships. Based on these theories, Jessica could act as a moral agent to the fetus and decides what happens next, whether to abort the fetus or whether to keep it to and grow to full term.

The theory I Agree With

This is a complex case that has moral conflicts and ethical concerns in whichever direction the decisions are taken. Therefore, I would go for the sentience theory. According to this theory, sentient beings have a relationship and moral status, which impact moral status (Entwistle, 2021). As such, the theory would impact the decision made regarding the status of the fetus. The mother has obligations to the fetus that should be accomplished, such as the need to protect the fetus and an obligation to God that no one should destroy what he has created. In addition, the fetus is alive and, therefore, would feel pain hence is not the right thing to abort it.

Conclusion.

The Christian worldview and various theories impact how individuals view the sanctity of life and the nature of humans. Every individual, in this case study has different values and views regarding human life. Even though there are conflicting ideas and views, I believe that abortion is not right and goes against God’s will and plan. However, it is important to note that this is a complex case study that needs joint efforts to come to a good solution. In addition, Jessica also needs to act as a moral agent and make the best decision for the fetus and the family.
