The inclusion of nurses in the systems development life cycle (SDLC) when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system is essential to the overall attainment of the set goals. Nurses, especially informatics nurses, are a critical component of effective care delivery because of role that they play in patient care delivery (AHRQ, n.d). The SDLC describes a continuous process of delivering an effective and efficient health information technology (HIT) system that employs a waterfall approach to implementing change in healthcare organization.

The SDLC entails six critical stages that include requirements definition and planning, analysis, design of the new system, implementation, and post-implementation evaluation. The inclusion of nurses at each stage of the process ensures that all organizational and patients’ needs are catered to and leads to effective development of a better user interface (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). In planning and requirement definition, having a nurse ensures that the system determines and defines the scope of issues to be tackled, helps to enlist and discuss possible solutions and allocation resources as well as determination of the project timelines. The inclusion of the nurse at this stage also entails identification of requirements to formulate outputs that the developers will use in building codes. Nurses have the right clinical knowledge of the processes and workflow in the organization. Therefore, failure to include them can lead to the development of a system that cannot address the specific patient needs.
The inclusion of nurses at the analysis stage is critical since the nurse can assist in identification of, explaining of and discussion about the HIT components like tools for effective decision making. The failure to include the nurse in the analysis phase can lead to a system with flows in its processes because of limited understanding of its working (Risling & Risling, 2020).
The design stage entails data and interface development to determine the visualization of the program and the required information (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). At this stage, the inclusion of nurses is essential because they help scrutinize the flowcharts and work processes to ensure that they follow the right direction to produce the expected outcomes. The failure to include nurses at this stage increases risks of omitting important input and data that can lead to a decline in the efficiency of the system.
Including nurses in the implementation phase helps to enhance collaboration with the SDLC team in customizing, testing, and installing the new system. Nurses help to organize meetings and get feedback from colleagues and identify any associated barriers (Risling & Risling, 2020). Therefore, failure to include them at this stage can result in the development of a non-functional system which may not support clinical care. Their inclusion increases their understanding of the system operation and promotes better navigation. The post-implementation evaluation stage requires nurses to ensure that any changes are identifies and resources availed for better operational systems. Failure to include them can lead to inability to capture some of these barriers.
The selection and planning of the development and implementation of HIT system in my organization involves nurses at each stage of the SDLC process. The inclusion was valuable as the SDLC team managed to integrate all aspects of care in the facility that impact nursing process. The inclusion was beneficial as the team include new designs to meet organizational needs for a better system. The inclusion was critical as it allowed the organization to understand different aspects of patient data and user interface to increase quality outcomes.

In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences.
In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development.

- Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.
- Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.
Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process.
