(2020) demonstrated nurse burnout as mental and emotional exhaustion that causes a loss of motivation and reduced commitment to work among clinicians. Its defining characteristics vary with magnitude and workplace characteristics. Clarke (2023) stated that it is common for nurses experiencing burnout to be fatigued, dread going to work, and feel underappreciated. These symptoms typify a loss of job satisfaction, which can have devastating effects on nurses and patients.

Significance of the Problem

To underline the significance of nurse burnout, it is crucial to examine its prevalence and impacts. In the current nursing practice, approximately 35%-54% of clinicians experience burnout symptoms (Shah et al., 2021). This implies that almost half of the clinicians at the center of patient care are vulnerable to nurse burnout. If not effectively controlled, nurse burnout hampers patient care outcomes profoundly. According to Kwon et al. (2021), physical and emotional exhaustion affects nurses’ concentration, increasing their chances of committing medical errors. This is a huge risk to patient safety and can hamper patients’ trust in care providers. Kwon et al. (2021) further stated that nurse burnout increases turnover intention. As a result, organizations spend massively on workforce replacement hence affecting their overall revenue. The high prevalence and devastating effects of nurse burnout underline the need for practical, sustainable solutions.

Target Population

The target population for the project is nurses. As frontline workers engaging in regular patient care, nurses should be adequately skilled in recognizing and preventing nurse burnout. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, nurses’ workload has increased, denoting an increased risk of nurse burnout (Shah et al., 2021). Considering the nursing shortage is yet to be fully addressed, nurses must embrace multidimensional and creative measures to prevent nurse burnout. Therefore, the project will focus on equipping nurses with skills for recognizing, preventing, and coping with nurse burnout.

Measurable Objectives

  1. By the end of the project, nurses should identify five signs of nurse burnout.
  2. By the end of the project, nurses should identify three self-care strategies for preventing and coping with nurse burnout.

Conclusion

Nurses should be physically, mentally, and emotionally optimal to provide competent patient care. Nurse burnout is a prevalent problem that hampers nurses’ ability to provide patient care that meets the desired outcomes. Recognizing burnout and effectively responding to it should be a priority for healthcare professionals and leaders. An organization-wide training program for nurses to equip them with self-care skills can help to reduce nurse burnout in the practice setting. The program focus areas include burnout recognition and self-care tips, including meditation, mindfulness, and exercises. Nurses should also be trained on the most effective time to implement these skills.
