NUR 550 Discuss the role of translational research in advancing equitable access to health care and preventative services and policies based on population health. Provide an example of a local health care policy that has been recently enacted and or is awaiting legislative passage that has been influenced by research.
Topic 8 DQ 1
At the core of translational research is the application of scientific research findings in clinical and population health to improve the overall wellness of individuals and communities. Translational research bridges the gap between scientific evidence and application with the aim of improving equity, access, and reducing health disparities. Accessibility to health care and preventive services as well as policies focus on improving the quality of care, and reducing costs (Myers, 2020). Translational research identifies evidence-based health conduct and behaviors, screenings, and immunizations to address public health issues like the need for physical activity to prevent occurrence of conditions like obesity, smoking cessation to prevent cancer and colonoscopy among other areas (Williams et al., 2018). The implication is that through translational research, individuals can live healthier lifestyles because of the knowledge that they gain while health services research allows health systems to enhance uptake of clinical preventive services. Research on policies allows communities to assimilate evidence-based practice policies (Tucker et al., 2019). Translational research bridges the current gaps that lead to high cost of care by establishing effective preventive approaches to deal with chronic conditions. Through this approach, a majority of the population gets positive outcomes, that would be burdensome, particularly among the low-income groups.

Provide an example of a local health care policy that has been recently enacted and or is awaiting legislative passage that has been influenced by research.
There are different local legislations across the country that leverage translational research. For instance, in Illinois, the legislation to expand mental health care access and in Los Angeles, California, the “vision zero” policy to reduce incidence of traffic collisions and fatalities are some of the local legislations based on translational research findings. The implication is that the use of translational research in developing policies at local levels on a host of health care issues is critical to expanding care provision and improving patient outcomes.
