The New York Assembly Bill 6848 establishes the Safe Staffing for Hospital Care Act. The Bill proposes minimum staffing levels for health care workers in various health care facilities. It mandates the submission of staffing plans and bans most mandatory overtime (NY State Assembly, 2021). It also proposes that every facility licensed under the Bill shall make sure that it is staffed in a way that arrays adequate, appropriately qualified nursing staff in each unit within the facility to meet the care needs of individual patients (NY State Assembly, 2021). Besides, the Bill requires that registered nurses make up at least 50% of the direct-care nurses in the staffing plan.

The legislation of the Bill might affect my future practice since I will be required to ensure that there is adequate nurse staffing in all departments. The Bill will impact the collective practice of nurses in New York since they will be working in healthy work environments with adequate staffing. Inadequate nurse staffing has been associated with adverse medical errors and patient infections (Haegdorens et al., 2019). Nurses will report fewer cases of burnout and have decreased turnover levels since the Bill prohibits mandatory overtime with prolonged work hours for direct-care nurses (Haegdorens et al., 2019). As a result, the Bill will promote nurses’ general well-being and reduce physical and mental disorders caused by burnout.
Advocacy entails supporting or championing a cause or course of action. I plan to engage in political advocacy for the nursing profession by presenting policy proposals to legislators in New York (O’Rourke et al., 2017). The proposed policies will seek to improve nurses’ well-being in the working environment and enhance the delivery of patient care to improve patients’ health outcomes. In addition, I will join a professional nursing organization since they have lobbyists that present nursing issues to legislators.
