Topic 7 DQ 2
Tobacco use, especially smoking, is a core public health concern because of its effects on people’s health. An effective current health policy is the comprehensive smoke-free policy that prohibits or bans smoking in public places, especially government settings. Today, more than 36 states have adopted this policy with the aim of reducing the health issues related to smoking like increased susceptibility to cancer and other chronic conditions (Semple et al., 2022). This policy is effective because of its different components.

Firstly, it limits secondhand smoke in workplaces and other public areas thereby preventing non-smokers from diseases and premature demise associated with the smoke (Bakhturidze et al., 2021). Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) has significant effects on one’s cardiovascular system in the short-term. The long-term effects of the exposure include increased risk for cancer, especially lung cancer and coronary heart disease. Exposing children to SHS leads to health complications that include sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections and suppressed growth of their lungs (Semple et al., 2022). Individual smokers also expose themselves to increased volumes of nicotine that impacts their overall health and wellbeing.
Different factors triggered the development of this policy to help reduce the adverse effects of SHS. The publication of reports based on research about the effects of SHS on health is one of the triggers of this policy. Therefore, policymakers at both state and federal levels realized that banning public smoking would reduce the rates of exposure to secondhand smoke as it had more lethal effects than even the first hand smoke. Through this intervention, policymakers were categorical that non-smokers would not be exposed to dangers emanating from secondhand smoke (Radó et al., 2021). The introduction of the policy was also aimed at increasing public awareness about the dangers of smoking and tobacco use in general.
