Advanced Patient Care

The provision of patient-centered care is crucial for care outcomes that include quality, safety, and efficiency. Health education is among the interventions that nurses and other healthcare providers utilize to ensure patient-centeredness in the care process. Health education addresses the concerns that patients may have about their health problems and needs and increases their awareness levels. Evidence has shown the immense benefits that patient education has, translating into the need for healthcare systems to move from provider-centered care to patient-centered care for optimum outcomes (Traeger et al., 2019). Therefore, this essay examines the influence of patient education based on an interview conducted with a family member.

The interview was conducted with my grandfather. The focus was on different questions that focused on the impact of patient education. The first question asked sought to elicit information about whether the grandfather received instruction on his self-care after an illness. The respondent reported that the healthcare provider educated him extensively about his health problem, management, and prevention of complications. The education included the required lifestyle and behavioral modifications he needed to maintain optimum health (Durrer Schutz et al., 2019). According to him, the education increased his understanding of the health problem and his role in the disease self-management process. It also empowered him to proactively explore the community resources he needed to use to achieve the desired health outcomes.

The interview also sought to find out if the healthcare providers advised the respondent on medication, diet, or exercise. The grandfather reported that a pharmacist educated him about the medication. This included focusing on the indication, use, side effects and adverse effect he was to report should they be experienced. Patient education on medication use is important for safety, as seen from the reduction in medication errors (Traeger et al., 2019). A nurse educated him about the recommended diet when using the medication and the need for active physical activity to minimize and prevent lifestyle diseases.

Social support is important for effective management of a health problem. Social support groups and individuals help patients to cope with increasing demands because of a disease. It also helps address issues such as stigmatization that patients with chronic illnesses experience (Walker et al., 2019). Therefore, among the questions asked during the interview were grandfather’s social support at home after the illness. According to him, his family members offered him the support he needed for disease management during the recovery period. The other source of social support included friends, relatives, and church members. The support helped him understand how to cope with the disease’s demands.

The last question during the interview was about his awareness about any assistance services that he may need as he grows older. The grandfather reported awareness to assistance services such as food, medical insurance, and transportation for the elderly. According to him, services such as those offered under the Affordable Care Act help the elderly access the care they need, hence, addressing barriers to healthcare in the community (Pandrangi et al., 2019). He also acknowledged the role of transportation services in helping him access the care he needs efficiently.

Conclusion

In summary, patient education is an important practice in healthcare. Education increases patient’s awareness about effective management of their health problems. Patients are also empowered to take responsibility for their health. Therefore, the interview findings demonstrate that healthcare providers offer education to their patients.
