Global Health Comparison Matrix and Narrative Statement Essay

Global health outcomes vary with the interventions that different nations apply to address health concerns. Policy interventions are critical to health optimization, and politics shape them significantly (Milstead & Short, 2019). Comparing policies in different countries can elucidate the importance of a global approach to health. The purpose of this matrix is to compare health policies in the United States and Canada in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Global Healthcare Issue COVID-19
Description COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies it as a priority for nations and healthcare providers since it has caused significant health and economic crises (WHO, 2021). Its responses are multidimensional, including vaccinations, testing, contact tracing, and restricting movements.
Country United States Canada
Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan

The policy outlines the roadmap for effectively fighting COVID-19 and staying ahead of the virus (The White House, 2023).

Its purpose of preventing the introduction and spread of communicable diseases (Detsky & Bogoch, 2020).

What are the strengths of this policy? It combines different interventions to control the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a legal intervention for protecting the masses from communicable diseases.
What are the weaknesses of this policy? It requires extensive funding to accomplish its goals. Some of its provisions, such as prohibiting inter-provisional travel, are detrimental to the country’s economic progress.
Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the specified global health issue. Poverty and health access disparities increase people’s vulnerability to COVID-19. Low-income populations experience more disease burdens related to the pandemic (Hall et al., 2022). Income and people’s locations cause variances in infections. Detsky and Bogoch (2020) found that infections are the highest in areas where people live in close quarters. Poverty and congestion are interrelated.
How has each country’ government addressed cost, quality, and access to the selected global health issue? The U.S. government has continually funded response programs directly and through partner organizations. For instance, USAID has donated over $10.4 billion towards vaccines and other efforts worldwide (USAID, 2023). Quality and access issues are addressed by providing evidence-based interventions and expanding support to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. The Canadian government funds response measures at the national level. A suitable illustration is $115 million allocation to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in 2020 for rapid responses (McMahon et al., 2020). Research-based interventions ensure that people get evidence-based support and different populations can be assisted according to their needs.
How has the identified health policy impacted the health of the global population? (Be specific and provide examples) The policy’s purpose is to prevent COVID-19 transmission. Doing so prevents mortality and morbidity resulting from COVID-19 infection. Preventing COVID-19 helps to reduce mental health concerns and other problems related to COVID-19. Besides, it improves people’s productivity.
Describe the potential impact of the identified health policy on the role of nurse in each country. It necessitates more nurses’ involvement in preventive health. Nurses must also partner with health stakeholders to protect populations from the COVID-19 pandemic. The policy underlines the importance of the nurse as a key partner in health optimization. Nurses must, therefore, be more involved in policy development, implementation, and evaluation to strengthen capacity.
Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. (Be specific and provide examples) Global health issues obligate healthcare organizations in the United States to strengthen their capacities as time advances. Innovative policies should be formulated to effectively respond to health crises. Increased health issues predict capacity issues in healthcare organizations. Hence, partnerships with the appropriate bodies should continue to ensure Canadian healthcare facilities have adequate programs, resources, and policies to address health issues.
General Notes/Comments National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan has helped the United States to effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, progressive improvement is necessary to address inefficiencies. The multidimensional nature of The Quarantine Act has helped Canada to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. Outcomes can still be improved through more partnerships at the organizational, community, and national levels.

A Plan for Social Change

Healthcare organizations should apply interventions that address their local needs comprehensively. As a nurse leader, I would advocate for the incorporation of a global perspective into my local practice by recommending it in practice and liaising with appropriate stakeholders for implementation. As Hassmiller and Pulcini (2020) stated, a global perspective is established on the principle that healthcare interventions surpass national borders. Accordingly, I would educate key partners in health about the need for comparing interventions in other countries and integrating them into local practice to achieve the best care outcomes. As a change agent, I would also be actively involved in implementing innovative approaches.

Nurse leaders should continually advocate for innovative care models and actively participate in healthcare delivery transformation. Advocacy also helps to improve patient outcomes by ensuring that barriers to care are effectively addressed. Incorporating a global perspective into patient care affects my local practice by ensuring that nursing care does not primarily rely on local methods. In agreement with Corless et al. (2018), effective responses to health issues, such as pandemics, require different partners and agencies to collaborate in setting policies and supporting health initiatives. Integrating their innovative approaches to delivering care is instrumental to local practice transformation and an expanded role as a nurse leader. The nurse leader’s role expands due to more engagement in response to health threats and providing leadership and coordination.

Healthcare delivery plays a crucial role in social change. Incorporating a global perspective into my local practice contributes to social change by helping to address healthcare problems comprehensively. As Corless et al. (2018) suggested, effective responses to infectious diseases can help communities to break the infection chain. Utilizing innovative global approaches can help to break the infection chains quickly hence creating healthier communities. Such communities are needed for the productivity and progressive development of nations.

Conclusion

Countries experience similar or different health problems on varying scales. As a result, they use different interventions that produce different outcomes. Comparing the United States and Canada’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic shows how countries use different policies toward a common problem. It further reflects the importance of a global perspective in patient care for effective responses against pandemics and other health concerns.

GLOBAL HEALTHCARE COMPARISON MATRIX AND NARRATIVE STATEMENT

Note: This Assignment (both Parts 1 & 2) is due on Day 5 of Week 11.

If you talk about a possible poor health outcome, do you believe that outcome will occur? Do you believe eye contact and personal contact should be avoided?

You would have a difficult time practicing as a nurse if you believed these to be true. But they are very real beliefs in some cultures.

Differences in cultural beliefs, subcultures, religion, ethnic customs, dietary customs, language, and a host of other factors contribute to the complex environment that surrounds global healthcare issues. Failure to understand and account for these differences can create a gulf between practitioners and the public they serve.

In this Assignment, you will examine a global health issue and consider the approach to this issue by the United States and by one other country.
