Diversity in Primary Care Sample Essay

During my nursing practice in a primary care clinic, I had the opportunity to care for a kid who had been diagnosed with dengue hemorrhagic fever and required a blood transfusion since her platelet count had substantially decreased according to her most recent laboratory findings. The child’s and her parents’ membership in the Jehovah’s Witnesses religion, which forbids the transfusion of blood and blood products, raised the conundrum. That was one of the most difficult circumstances I’ve seen in my professional career since it required me to balance my ethical duty to uphold patient and family religious beliefs with the need to save the patient’s life through necessary medical care.

According to research, the majority of Jehovah’s Witnesses are reluctant to get blood transfusions because of fear of rejection (Christmals, 2021). Nevertheless, a small percentage of them support the notion of blood transfusion depending on the precise type of blood product required. Combining this study with my individual moral and ethical standards as a nurse, I decided to handle the situation professionally while taking into account the patient’s rights and religious beliefs. I advised the patient’s family that I fully understood and respected their religious beliefs and that the blood transfusion was necessary for their child,  as well as informed them of any potential health repercussions if they decide against the medical procedure. I then gave the family some time to consider their choice while I spoke with my preceptor.

My preceptor gave me advice on other treatments. In the end, they decided to try alternative methods of raising the child’s platelet count, including fluid therapy, dietary supplements, boosting the child’s immune system, and natural home remedies like consuming foods high in folate concentrate and iron (Ritter, 2020). The child’s health considerably improved over a few days and successfully recovered from dengue hemorrhagic fever.

This experience has taught me that healthcare workers are more likely to have pleasant relationships with patients and deliver better treatment if they understand what separates their patients’ cultural values, beliefs, and practices from their own (Christmals, 2021). It’s also crucial to take into account how your cultural views, attitudes, and behaviors may influence how you engage with patients. It’s important to think about getting assistance if a nurse suspects that a cultural prejudice has negatively impacted a patient.
