Diverse Population.

Nurse educators are devoted to ensuring that each learner’s learning needs are met. I encountered a male student who was an English as a second language (ESL) Learner. He came to the US as a refugee from Iraq and later enrolled in nursing school. He was not confident speaking around other ENL students and would often stop in the middle of a sentence. Besides, he avoided interacting with his peers and was often isolated. The student also found challenges in understanding complicated medical terminologies.

Preparing course material and assignments that assist each student in a nursing program is usually difficult. It is even more challenging to develop the course material and assignments with ESL students. Schartz et al. (2022) explain that systematic and purposeful changes should be implemented to prevent course failures in ESL students while remaining inclusive to all students. The instructor can increase ESL students’ success by performing frequent assessments, which determine the learner’s ability to recall appropriate language used based on their patient’s specific clinical situation (Schartz et al., 2022). In addition, the instructors should present the course material in various ways to allow the ESL students to speak and reinterpret the information in a manner they best retain it. Furthermore, the instructor should give assignments that focus on the ESL student taking an active role in understanding vocabulary to help develop rich associations with those terms. This can help the student to interpret patient scenarios correctly.
