Autoimmune hepatitis refers to a chronic condition whose cause is unknown. The disease is characterized by unrelenting liver inflammation that happens when the immune system of the body turns against the liver cells (Tunio et al., 2021). Although the precise cause of autoimmune hepatitis is unclear, environmental and genetic factors are attributed to the condition. The tests and procedures that can be used in the diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis include liver biopsy and blood tests. A liver biopsy is conducted to verify the diagnosis and establish the extent and type of liver damage. This procedure involves the extraction of a small amount of liver tissue and sending the sample to a laboratory for analysis. On the other hand, blood tests involve testing blood samples for potential antibodies that can differentiate autoimmune hepatitis from viral hepatitis and diseases with the same symptoms. Antibody tests can also highlight the nature of autoimmune hepatitis a patient has.

The three stages of autoimmune hepatitis include autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
