Nurse practitioners, especially those dealing adults and elderly patients, adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioners, ACGNP, must be aware and comprehend the different laws and legal provisions on certain procedures like “do not resuscitate (DNR) for patients in critical conditions. Through state legislations, patients can either access or not such services. In Texas, the rules for DNR and withdrawal of life support give guidelines on what nurses should do or not when handling patients that require such services. The Texas DNR order are part of the state’s legislation, 133.41 Hospital Functions and Services that were adopted in 2018 during the 85th Legislative session (TNP, n.d). The law provides for circumstances when physicians and other providers should execute the DNRs. The law mandates a facility to integrate procedures and patient rights as part of their bylaws and practice guidelines. The law includes out-of-hospital DNR in situations like emergency where physicians and NPs are mandated either to stop the procedures or not; even when in life-saving situations.

DNR order arises when resuscitation is necessary for individuals who have stopped breathing and whose hearts have stopped beating and requires restoration to consciousness (Thompson, 2018). Nurse practitioners need to ensure that individuals with DNR orders do not have such procedures when in coma or critical condition. The law also mandates the inclusion of the DNR order in the patient’s medical records and ensure that nurse practitioners develop plans of care based on these provisions. The implication is that the nursing plans of care should indicate if a physician has issued a DNR order for such patients or individuals (Hutton et al., 2022). The DNR order offer a host of benefits to individuals since they make those decisions and instruct their providers to conduct the specified procedures.
