Topic 1 DQ 2

Having the “spirit of inquiry” entails the tenacious point or level of curiosity that one develops in research and practice, especially in evidence-based practice (EBP). The implication is that the having this spirit means that one has a constant sense of curiosity that informs both learning and practice. Nurses with such a spirit remains inquisitive and asks probing questions to seek out novel solutions to issues facing her or him in practice as they deal with patients from diverse backgrounds. The spirit of inquiry is essential in nursing since it fosters innovative thinking and expounds one’s possibilities in generating novel solutions to healthcare challenges and problems (Fencl et al., 2018). The desire to increase one’s knowledge base and practice, especially through the evidence-based practice (EBP) process is essential and ensures that they integrate best interventions to tackle patient care issues presented to them in diverse settings.

Studies show that it takes registered nurses (RNs) close to 17 years to implement new interventions and information in their practice (Sherwood, 2021). Therefore, the spirit of inquiry focuses on asking relevant questions about such issues as the gaps of implementing the EBP and how nurses can get innovative ways to reduce such barriers for patients’ benefits (Migliore et al., 2020). The EBP process is elaborate and entails asking the right question in the right manner and locating evidence as well as determining if or not a change is needed in practice.

As an advanced registered nurse, encouraging this spirit is essential through modeling to other staff members, especially new and young nurses joining the practice. Advanced registered nurse should encourage other nurses to implement this spirit as a critical way of attaining the goals of EBP in their practice environment. As a critical care nurse, one’s main role is to ensure patient safety and delivery of quality care that meets patient demands (Sherwood, 2021). The implementation of EBP in critical care settings like the medical-surgical units is different from that of outpatient nurses or those in general wards because of the level of intensity and need for increased levels of accuracy to prevent any adverse events to the delicate patients. This means that one should follow the EBP process more keenly to prevent missteps that can be devastating to patients and their overall health.
