DQ 1: Intervention

In routine practice, nurses encounter patient care or workplace issues hampering care outcomes. One of the effective ways to address such issues is to implement evidence-based practice. My proposed intervention is implementing a CAUTI bundle care to reduce CAUTI rates among patients using an indwelling catheter. The bundle combines standard interventions, including hand hygiene, catheter maintenance, and an aseptic catheter insertion procedure. It is an effective way of reducing CAUTI rates and improving health outcomes in patients.

Implementing the CAUTI bundle supports the population of focus by bettering its health outcomes. Research indicates that CAUTI increases hospitalization, morbidity, and mortality (Jatta et al., 2020). As a result, a significant reduction in CAUTI rates would reduce the risk of such adverse outcomes. Improving care quality would also lead to high patient satisfaction. To the setting, reducing CAUTI rates is critically needed to reduce healthcare costs since hospitalization increases CAUTI-related costs (Schweiger et al., 2020). Implementing the bundle supports my role as a practitioner and a change agent. I should be actively involved in implementing evidence-based practice (EBP) and embrace a spirit of inquiry in routine practice. Implementing EBP is a foundation for improved and sustainable care outcomes.

The problem selected is amenable to a research-based intervention using the PICOT format. As Ford and Melnyk (2019) suggested, the PICOT question is the search strategy that leads to an effective search of evidence. The research-based intervention is a CAUTI bundle, and many nursing articles explore its importance from diverse angles. The search process can be modified using appropriate phrases and Boolean articles to get the best evidence for practice change. As demonstrated by the PICOT question, all the relevant elements of a PICOT question are present.

PICOT Question: Among patients using indwelling urinary catheter, what is the efficacy of using CAUTI bundle care as compared to no intervention in lowering the rates of CAUTI within six months?
