DISCUSS THE ROLE OF TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH IN ADVANCING EQUITABLE ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE AND PREVENTATIVE SERVICES AND POLICIES BASED ON POPULATION HEALTH NUR 550
Discussion 1
At the core of translational research is the utilization of new discoveries emanating from basic sciences in improving the health status of communities through public health interventions. Through translational research public health providers and systems as well as organizations develop and implement best practices in prevention, therapeutic or treatment and diagnosis of patients. The implication is that through translational research provider create innovative ways in their practice and policies to address health disparities through identification of social determinants of health (SDOH). Patients and health populations encounter health disparities due to social, economic and educational levels (Brown, 2018). Equitable access to health care and preventive services as well as population health policies require providers and organizations to leverage translational research discoveries to reduce existing health disparities among the different groups and individuals.

Translational research creates new and innovative ways to improve health equity and access, especially through the application of evidence-based practice interventions and implementation of policies that reduce inequalities. Public health officials and organizations develop knowledge and skills to enhance health knowledge and skills for diverse health populations to deal with emerging health issues and diseases, especially pandemics. Through translational research, healthcare organizations and providers offer information for populations to adopt healthier lifestyles and while clinicians improve the uptake of clinical preventive services (Moriya et al., 2023). Research on policies allows communities assimilate evidence-based policies in their care environment for better patient care delivery and outcomes.
The enactment of the Affordable Care Act 2010 and the subsequent revisions as well as other federal policies on healthcare have leveraged translational research to help reduce health disparities and inequalities. The Affordable Care Act ushered in new health coverage options and expanded the health insurance market regulations as well as provisions to protect consumers and ensure that they have access to better care interventions (Moriya et al., 2023). The ACA and other healthcare policies are designed to reduce inequalities and improve access to better and affordable care for all individuals based on Medicare and Medicaid plans in their respective states.

Discussion 2
Patient advocacy is a core role of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) since they have better understanding of health issues affecting their patients. The advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) has three main roles in advocating equitable population health services and policies. These include offering better care to the health population, attainment of better outcomes for patients and health populations and ensuring that there is reduction in the overall costs of care to enable all populations to have equal access and care advantage. These efforts lead to reduction of health disparities (Anders, 2021). The Institute of Medicine in its 2010 report emphasized the critical role that APRNs and other nurses play due to their specialty and knowledge as well as experience as providers. As an advanced registered nurse, my role in advocating for equitable population health services and policies will entail engaging the different healthcare stakeholders, from legislators at state and federal levels to organizational managers to enhance health insurance options for vulnerable populations. Equitable distribution and allocation of health resources by analyzing the social determinants of health (SDOH) for different health population are essential to attaining equitable services and policies (Bachynsky, 2020). The implication is that I will advocate improved legislation and resource allocation to ensure that all health populations have better access to care at affordable cost.
Challenges to population advocacy may arise due to different priorities and interests, especially political interests based on competing ideologies and resources. The other challenge may be support from the organizational leadership and management as well as need for better information distribution approaches for the different targeted health populations and individuals. However, it is essential for APRNs to collaborate with other stakeholders to improve overall health outcomes through a reduction in health disparities and inequity through advocacy.

Discussion 1: Discuss the role of translational research in advancing equitable access to health care and preventative services and policies based on population health. Provide an example of a local health care policy that has been recently enacted and or is awaiting legislative passage that has been influenced by research.
Discussion 2: As an advanced registered nurse, discuss your future role in advocating for equitable population health services and policies. Do you anticipate any challenges or barriers to “population advocacy”? How would you meet these challenges?
